In this unit, we learned about "Design cycle" which include the followings:

"PROBLEM - RESEARCH - IDEAS - MAKE - EVALUATION"

We learned this to get brief overview of how we'll be studying design. And Mr. Adam's assessments always followed the following steps:

1. Inquiry & Analysis
- In this step, when we were given the overview of what we are doing, we chose our specific target or topic or design problem. Then, we have to research on relevant topics.

2. Develping ideas
- In this step, we developed at least 4 ideas of how we are going to create our final product

3. Creating the solution
- Now, after developing ideas in step 2 and finishing our research in step 1, we create our final product; which is the problem that was justified in step 1.

4. Evaluation
- Like it was included in design cycle, we evaluate on our final product. We usually send out the surveys to our classmates and give scores to each others' works. And based on the scores, we make a final judgement of how good our products are based on different evaluation specifications (criteria)

Apart from the design cycle, we learned design values which were the followings:

1. Ethics
2. Aesthetics
3. Price
4. Consumers

1. Inquiry and Analysis

In this unit, we first chose one specific design value we are going to focus on. I chose "Ethics" and chose a specific design problem, which was using "Animal's fur" to make our clothes. We also made posters related to chosen our values

2. Developing ideas

Now, we developed our ideas of how we are going to create our final product. In this unit, I decided to create a video which raises awareness. Then, I made 4 different posters of how I'm going to arrange the shift of slides, what to include in each scene as subtitles, music and so on.

3. Creating the solution

I made my video using "Youtube video editor" and it took about a week to create it. I recorded my process of making it step by step. I also justified any changes that I made while making the video.

4. Evaluation

After finishing up my video, I shared my video with my classmates. They watched my video and gave me scores out of 5, for every criteria that I made to evaluate my product in detail. Some evaluation criteria were:

1. Does it raise awareness?
2. Does the music fit to the content of the video?
3. Is it easy to read the subtitles?
4. Did it change your design value?

My marks for this unit

Criterion A (Inquiry and Analysis)
- 8 / 8

Criterion B (Developing ideas)
- 8 / 8

Criterion C (Creating the solution)
- 8 / 8

Criterion D (Evaluation
- 8 / 8

The thing that I liked the most about Mr. Ada's teaching strategy was that he divided criteria based on the design cycle:

1. Criterion A - Inquiry and Analysis
2. Criterion B - Developing Ideas
3. Criterion C - Creating the solution
4. Criterion D - Evaluation

By doing so, students were able to adapt themselves in how the actual design cycle works and get the detailed overview of what they should do in the future if they confront any design problem

Moreover, I liked he did various topics such as problems related to our current society (like the first unit in grade 9) and solving our real life problems (the unit we did in grade 9 -flat pack design. It was about designing a flat pack to tidy up our desks)

Lastly, I liked how he gives one more chance for students to upload their works once again and giving a new mark if they are not satisfied with their marks. Giving this opportunity was a kind of motivation for students to put more efforts in their assessments and knowing their problems based on Mr. Adam's comments. And then, trying to improve or fix their problems.

I didn't like how Mr. Adam keep changed to deadlines. In my case, I always finished my works on time and even often stayed up late to finish them. But when a lot of students didn't finish their works, he just postponed the deadline and gave the equal chance for students to get the marks based on the same criteria even if they uploaded late. I think this strategy was quite unfair.

Also, I want Mr. Adam to teach us using materials in the design workshop such as woodcutters if we are learning units that require using them. In our latest unit, we had to use woodcutters to cut out the woods to create our flat pack, but instead of giving an opportunity for students to use the cutter on their own, he just cut the woods for students. I know it's because of safety issues, but I think we are old enough (we are grade 9 students) and it would be interesting for students if they can actually use those tools.
