Sickle cell disease is rare. A group of disorders that cause red blood cells to become misshapen and break down. There are fewer than 200,000 U.S. cases per year. 50% of patients with sickle cell disease survived beyond the fifth decade. A large proportion of those who died had no overt chronic organ failure but during an acute episode of pain, chest syndrome, or stroke. Early mortality was highest among patients whose disease was symptomatic. People with sickle cell disease are expected to live less than 50 years, also blood is chronically low in oxygen. Sickle cell disease is an inherited condition, nothing can be done to prevent sickle cell disease, but it is important to have an early diagnosis. The sickle shape of the cell clogs where the other cells travel.
