After watching the $100 race video, I think it really shines a light on how important equity is in our school system and the need to ensure that there is a level playing field for all students. If we do not take the time to ensure that needs are being met to help students succeed, we will continue to further the gap.

After viewing the video (running race) it made me more aware of the "advantages" I may have had growing up. It also makes me respect someone more for the obstacles (through no fault of their own) they were able to overcome and be successful.

I teach Latin to 10-12....I will use this "spark" to re-examine the historical components of my courses in relation to "race" relations, i.e. examining how the classical writers/historians discussed encounters with people other than their own "kind", the attitudes/beliefs espoused in these writings to make connections to these types of encounters today

This video reminds us that the "playing field" isn't level. I like to think that everyone has an equal opportunity in life...not necessarily an equal outcome (too many variables to control), but this just highlights that it isn't always the case. Hopefully, within our school setting (classrooms), we can create a more level playing field and afford everyone the opportunity to be successful.

What "sparked" me was the importance of understanding the impact that race and culture has on learning. It is easy to get into a routine of moving through curriculum and the hustle of teaching at NP. It is extremely important as an educator to stay current with events not only in our community but nationally to understand what mindset my students may have as they navigate my course. I want to do a better job of educating myself and staying current with events so I can better support my students not only in my class as learners but as young people navigating a challenging world.

However, after learning about the potential harm this video may cause via researchers, advocates, etc on twitter, such as reinforcing stereotypes as well as inherently making students relive trauma, it challenged my thinking about the video as a whole. I think the message of equity is incredibly important and absolutely must be at the forefront of what we do for kids, staff, and the communities we serve. In addition, it is also important to understand how our actions and ideas may be perceived regardless of their intention. By having open, and honest conversations about experiences and points of view, I think we can find sustainable ideas for change.

Reading the Historical Foundations of Race, I question the author's brief assessment of slavery in Ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt. Some of the Latin courses translate passages that deal with the Roman attitudes towards other nations/tribes/groups. This article challenged my thinking because I feel that the author did not really delve into the complexities of slavery in the antiquity. This felt like a paragraph that was thrown in to very briefly address the "but what about" questions. I guess I can't say that it confirmed or changed my thinking, so I will say that it challenged me to consider what I had studied and try to apply those lessons and historical context to class conversations.

I chose to watch the video about the $100 race. It was a great way to demonstrate the challenges that some people face and the privileges that others have. I think this would be a great video to show students and to begin some real conversations. It is a simple way to demonstrate how many people of color have struggles that white Americans don't experience. I am sure this would be extremely relatable for students in the school.

In the "How to Help Students Navigate "Anti-Asian Racism" I found it interesting that they suggest sticking to the facts and providing historical context when it comes to Anti-Asian racism. I have a student in the Knight Crier who has written a lot of about her Asian culture and racist undertones she has dealt with from others. I had not considered prior to the last year how real this was. Recognizing it now, I see the need to engage more directly with this subject in my classes, in which I have many bright and talented Asian students who may just not be asserting their feelings about this very real issue.

A "spark" I found was the video linked in one of the Slide decks from the "How to help students navigate Anti-Asian racism" article. The video explained some of the historical context around racism towards the AAPI community and talked about it as "nothing new." This phrasing sparked a realization that at the HS we tend to overemphasize the historical and systemic racism against one particular community (the Black community) while spending less time and attention acknowledging that it is not the only community of color to experience historical racism. This video is something I would share with my HS English students to shine the light on another POC group's historical struggle with racism as the video mentions that if we allow racism against one group to go unaddressed, it merely serves to perpetuate racism in all forms. This video is inclusive of "groups" beyond just the AAPI community as it also mentions the Latinx community and groups designated as "other," so I think it is an important resource to remind students that racism is not a challenge faced by our black and brown students alone.

The video reminded me that educational opportunities often vary based on circumstances well beyond a person's control. Where you were born or your home life situation is out of a child's control, yet they face persecution in many ways right from the start of their lives. Educationally, we lower our standards instead of meeting students where they are and helping them rise up. Because of how stuck we are in a pattern that historically offers education to white privileged people. Our American education system hasn't changed dramatically enough in over a century. Which is really criminal, if you think about it.

I grew up with none of the advantages mentioned in the $100 race video. The video is a false analogy. There isn’t only one prize at the end. Anybody who finishes the race gets something. Sure, it took me longer to finish college than many of the kids I grew up with. I don’t begrudge them the advantages they had, and I don’t feel sorry for myself, or bitter that I didn’t have those advantages. I achieved the success in life that I wanted. I used my humble origins to fuel my desire to achieve something. I’m not envious of those that have more. I’m glad they have those advantages! The last thing a person without those advantages needs is somebody making them feel bitter about their situation, and envious of those that have more. Also, it’s not about race. It’s about economic class. Question, in the video, how many white kids never took a step forward? I didn’t see a one. Not every white kid has all, or even any, of those advantages. I know of whole communities in the mountains where no young person has any of those advantages. What is very telling is that white kids that don’t have those advantages aren’t in college (assuming that this was a college environment). Also, the way the video was framed made it seem that every white person has at least one of those advantages, and no POC does. Not a true reflection of our society. Carroll Independent School District in TX has little to no disportionality in their schools . . the district is diverse and also has only around 1% of their students listed as poor.

I would really like to see us have a panel discussion with various community members, students, staff, etc to talk about first hand experiences and shed more insight on how our conversations can lead to actionable change. I think this could be really powerful and eye opening to hear different perspectives about experiences and topics. I think the more we discuss and share, the more we further our understanding of the challenges and obstacles we face daily.

It is not their job to teach or inform people how to be anti-racist, but simply hearing their perspectives and sharing them with students can be beneficial. There was a powerful video linked in the “How to Help Students Navigate Anti-Asian Racism." It would be helpful to use something like this so our AAPI students feel less alone and their non-AAPI peers can better understand a perspective different than their own. This could also help students of different marginalized groups come together and work through issues they have faced in the past with people who may share some of the same experiences. I appreciated the open dialogue format these resources suggested and allowed for.

In exploring the Smithsonian website (section for teachers), I was reminded of the need for students to help set the norms in the class, and that way collectively we can create a safe space. One speaker then spoke of transitioning from a safe space (which I think I do create) to a brave space - being in a position to share stories and ideas that won't be agreed upon by all. I fall short there in class; I stop the kids at the "safe" and need to help them share their truths by creating a brave space now.

I watch the video about the $100 foot race and it really illustrated the concept of a disadvantaged starting position to NO fault of the kid. I felt true sadness for the kids who did not take steps forward, and watching them I could only assume how they were feeling but it was uncomfortable and upsetting, so say the least (HS HPE). In class we talk about things students control and things students do not. This could certainly apply and help all students gain better perspective on the "race of life"

It challenged me to think about all of my students, the struggles they might undergo, the life they live, and what opportunities they have been given in their life. No student should ever be judged or made to feel inferior to students who have had privilege simply because of opportunities that have been handed to them. This really makes me want to come up with ways in which I can challenge students to think about the opportunities they have had in life and make positive about even the smallest opportunities. I want my students to know that they can do or achieve anything they want if they work hard, regardless of privilege.

Notice what triggers your response and how it manifests in your body." This perspective asks us, as educators, to reflect personally in situations. In all the reading/training/PD, I don't remember grasping such a concept. Very important to self-reflect and reframe things!

A recent article 6abc.com reported that a local teacher was under some heavy criticism for posting an assignment with questions about the Derek Chauvin trial that were considered heavily biased. Teams of students (no more than 3) can each investigate one or two questions from this assignment and discuss the types of bias involved in these questions and how they can be reworded to reduce/eliminate bias. Most likely, this task would occur in a Statistics course, but could be applied in any course where experimental design is covered.

The article that I read had to do with making our classrooms more open to the proper way of addressing those students who identify differently than their original gender. It is really going to be my goal to make sure that I address my students by the preferred gender pronouns. It is definitely a way of making them feel more comfortable and provides a more open learning environment. I teach at NPHS in special education.

I am currently exploring the Nation Museum of AA and there are so many great topics on their website. One in particular I found is called Whiteness. In this part of the museum, I saw a quote that said something like "being white does not mean that you have not gone through any hardships, it means you have not gone faced hardships because of the color of your skin" and that really stuck to me. It confirms my thoughts that while everyone struggles, everyone's situations or why they struggle or face a hardship is different and we need to acknowledge that. Someone who is white will never be able to know what a hardship is for a black person...and same vise versa. Speaking about these hardships and sharing how they felt for YOU is important so people can try to understand where I/you are coming from. As a counselor, it is important for me to listen to how an experience impacted that specific individual rather than assuming that I know what they have been through even if we went through similar situations.

However, there was an article discussing how harmful silence and ignoring issues can be and that confirmed that I can no longer go about "business as usual" in my classroom while real world events are traumatizing our students with shocking regularity.

This just shows that the sooner we start discussing this topic in schools the greater chance for change.

It reminds me as a teacher to be mindful of the fact that some students haven’t had the same opportunities as others, and that in order to avoid just giving up, these students need to be provided with empathy, understanding, and additional support and encouragement. The facilitator commented that “if this were a fair race...I guarantee you some of these black dudes would smoke all of you.” Trying as best we can to make it a “fair race” needs to be part of our work.

I enjoyed the fact that there was a video that allowed people with disabilities to be observed in the idea of diversity, in regards to them being part of the whole of society, but I would rather this video highlighted better how our preconceived notions of what "disability" is, and how it damages that group, as well as the whole of society, due to them being marginalized and dismissed. In the future, our Cultural Proficiency training should work to also include what diversity looks like in more detail, as in this case with the people with disabilities.

I have struggled with this program because I want specific details about what the district wants us to do. It was all theory until the last in-service. So I read an article from the District link of resources called "What anti-racist teachers do differently". This article opened my eyes to several possibilities. It talked about students of color and how they react in classrooms where teachers care about them and challenge them as opposed to classrooms where the teachers expect the student to conform to their teaching style. Students from differing cultural backgrounds have different discourse styles. I will be diversifying my assignments next year to provide all students with options. I would like to incorporate more oral language into the curriculum such as debates and poetry or rap recitals of content knowledge and issues. I have always done group work but next year the group work will be in smaller student numbers, no more than 3 students per group so that everyone has to provide their own voice.

The spark for me is white privilege and racism. I watched the $100.00 race and then went back to a Ted Talk from a previous session with John Biewen's Ted Talk on "The Lie that Invented Racism" as I found a connection. Until we understand that racism supports profits, and political and social systems for a select few, not a biological truth, we can't recognize or understand how white privilege impacts everything anyone attempts to do in life. And we didn't earn it, whites just have it and don't recognize it. We profit from it , even as we say we aren't racists. And we never have to think about it because the world is structured for us. Not the same for brown and black people how are unjustly handicapped from the beginning.

This video showed me one perspective and how the presenter likened the idea of "disability" to the idea of "diversity", showing that there are disabilities of all kinds. My concern with the video, is that it still allowed the possibility of the "Us and Them" mentality, where a person could better identify a person with disabilities, but didn't show that disabled or not, that we are still all people with goals and dreams of our own, who should be given the chance to achieve them.

I explored the National Museum of African American History and Culture and found the section on Bias. I read through and watched a video discussing the science behind bias, how it is a necessary evolutionary need for the brain to be able to make quick decisions to keep ourselves safe (life-saving). But that also means that we have to consciously think about our bias such that we don't let it be life-destroying. I would like to discuss with my Advanced Bio students how your bias physically works in the brain, and how to use the brain more effectively in looking deeper into our bias.

The "Race Video" was a hard punch in the face. When questions are asked that are drenched in very real situations for how we were raised and our social status set many folks far apart. The reality of what separates us clearly illustrates the privilege that so many have. The impact of things that I had nothing to do with but where handed to me was truly eye opening.

It confirmed, that even with good intentions, I am woefully ignorant of what a black or brown child faces daily in life, let alone the classroom. Because I was born with the benefits of white privilege and the gift of not having to think about race to run my daily life, I don't really understand or can conceive of what it means to be black or brown. I expect certain cultural understandings that the brown and black students don't have while they have other understandings of which I know nothing. Compassion and empathy are not enough, they must be grounded in a great phrase I found in another article "moral imagination". Loved this: "Moral imagination starts with empathy, but it does not content itself simply to feel another’s pain. Empathy without action risks reinforcing the status quo.

The "race" race video certainly makes a point about advantage in our society, and advantage often correlates with SES. But the link here reads “race video, “ which I find interesting. The coach in the video makes a point about the black guys “smoking” the white guys if the whites weren’t advantaged. Well, there’s a blatant stereotype, no? Certainly one that some “black guys” wouldn’t appreciate - it’s like saying all Asians are good at Math. Why include that - it’s irrelevant.

It’s about advantages. This raises another question - what’s the difference between advantage and privilege? Does either suggest undeserved position founded on the suffering of others? Why does the rhetoric of racial bias focus on the term “privilege” instead of advantage? Isn’t the point that all should have equal opportunities in our society? To focus on what creates inequalities and address the root causes rather than suggest those who have achieved without disadvantage are somehow privileged rather than state those who must achieve in the face of disadvantage are deprived of equity?

I think this would be an interesting article to share:

https://www.insidehighered.com/views/2016/11/15/why-its-better-talk-about-advantage-rather-privilege-essay

It suggests that the language of advantage directed toward those possessing advantage generates less hostility and defensiveness, more openness - isn’t that the idea?
