After doing a week in a hospital shadowing a neurosurgeon I looked into going into the medicine career field. It is a very lengthy process to qualify for so most of the investigating was to do with medical school and medicine degrees postgraduate or undergraduate then all the intern years and experience. But during that you have to choose what brance to go into so i was looking into what branches that i would like to do and they included becoming a surgeon - cardiovacular or neuro, Anethesiologist or something in Pediatrics. I also looked into a buisness job like marketing or a HR role and found them quite interesting. I much preffered the former (medicine), there are a few ways to get into medicine, you can go straight into a medicine degree after leaving cert then go on from there or you can do a different degree (science degree is most popular) then go into medicine after that degree so you have more options if medical school doesnt go well or if you dont get the leaving cert points you needed. or HPAT test score. HPAT test is a test that anyone who is going into medicine has to do, they combine that score with your leaving cert to determine if you get into the course.

Career Investigation: Medical Career in Dublin

Introduction

Dublin has an excellent healthcare sector that attracts medical professionals from various fields. This investigation explores career opportunities in the medical field within the city, focusing on education, work environment, and potential career paths.

There are several renowned hospitals and healthcare facilities, including:

1. St. James's Hospital

2. The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital

3. Tallaght University Hospital

4. Beaumont Hospital

These facilities provide various services, from emergency care to specialised surgeries and outpatient services.

Career Paths in Medicine

The medical field has a wide range of professions. Here are some career options that I would consider following:

1. Doctors (General Practitioners and Specialists)

 - Education: Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in Medicine, followed by a minimum of 4-6 years of residency training in a chosen speciality.

 - Roles: Diagnose and treat illnesses, provide preventive care, and manage patient health.

2. Nurses

 - Education: Nursing degrees (General Nursing or Advanced Nursing Practice), usually a 3-4 year program.

 - Roles: Provide patient care, assist in treatment plans, and educate patients and families. Scrub nurses are special nurses who help in the OR by sanitising the room and giving the surgeon whatever they need.

3. Pharmacists

 - Education: A degree in pharmacy, followed by training in various healthcare settings, usually a 4-year program.

 - Roles: Dispense medications, consult on drug therapies, and optimise patient outcomes.

Work Environment

Working in the medical field in Dublin comes with specific demands and rewards:

- Flexible Hours: While some careers may involve long shifts (especially for nurses and doctors), many roles, such as pharmacists and allied health professionals, may offer more standard hours.

- Collaborative Teams: Medical professionals often work alongside a diverse group of healthcare providers, so you have to be able to collaborate and listen to others and be patient.

- Continual Learning: The medical field requires ongoing education to stay updated on new treatments, technologies, and regulations. You are constantly learning and never stop.

Job Market and Opportunities

The demand for healthcare professionals in Dublin continues to grow. Factors contributing to this include an ageing population and an increase in chronic health issues. Job opportunities are available in both the public and private sectors, with varying levels of job security and benefits.

Conclusion

A medical career in Dublin offers a range of possibilities for those passionate about healthcare. With various roles available and a dynamic healthcare environment, pursuing a career in this sector can be both fulfilling and impactful. As the demand for medical services continues to rise, now may be an ideal time to explore and commit to this path.
