Humans needed to be loyal in the past for survival. Is it something that it now less important in the 2000’s? Why or why not?

I believe that loyalty is not less important in the 2000’s because you still have to be loyal to succeed. For instance, if you’re loyal to your friends and family when you are in need, they will provide for you. Also if you’re loyal to your employer, you’re most likely to get a promotion. Being loyal is always beneficial to humans so that’s why it hasn't become any less important these days.

Is loyalty more important to you than “popularity” or “fitting in”? Why or why not?

Loyalty is and always will be more important than "popularity" or "fitting in" to me. I was never a popular kid nor have I ever felt like I fit in, but I would always have my friends and my family by my side who I love and trust. What can popularity give me? Friends I suppose, but would those friends truly care about me and love me or would they be “fake friends”. Would they just talk with me to seem cool? Since I’m not popular I know who my real friends are and I know that these people genuinely care about me. Being loyal to me is about trusting, supporting and loving someone, you will never leave their side and they will never leave yours. As long as I have people who will always be there for me, I’m good. I don’t need to be popular, just need to be loved.

An example of dramatic irony would be that throughout the story, the reader suspects that “release” is death. The other characters are oblivious to it. We see later though that Jonas discovers that releasing is actually death.

Jonas’s father’s assignment is Nurturer. But we soon discover that he doesn't just take care of her babies, he kills some of them as well. This is situational irony since the nurturer is actually a murder.

Another example of situational irony would be when Jonas is skipped over at the ceremony and he believes that he has done something wrong. But in reality he was selected for a position that has great honor.

Ponyboy said that he wanted to live in the countryside so that he and the gang could live a better life. But later in the novel, Ponyboy and Johnny have to run away to the country, so Ponyboy does eventually get his wish, just not in the way he wanted. This is an example of situational irony.

An example of verbal irony would be when it says “ "Oh, my, my"--- Dally looked bored--- "you've got me scared to death.” Dally states that he is scared to death but in reality he looks bored.

For an example of dramatic irony, Dally says “You ought to know better than to run away in just a sweatshirt, and a wet one at that. Don't you ever use your head?". It is then said that Ponyboy thought he sounded like Darry. What makes it ironic is that earlier in the book, Darry tells Ponyboy that he nevers uses his head. The readers can see that when Pony leaves Darry, Dally fills that role and gives him the same advice. The readers can see the connection between the two but not Ponyboy, which is why it is dramatic irony.

What is the main problem with stereotypes?

I think that the main problem with stereotypes is that a lot of people will pre-judge people because of stereotypes. This is an issue because stereotypes can make it hard for some people to make friends, get a job, be included, etc. For example, in The Outsiders thanks to stereotypes, everyone thinks that the greasers are just white-trash. But in reality we see that Ponyboy, who is a greaser, likes to read and to dream. Ponyboy is different from his gang, he does well in school, he loves literature, he has a big imagination and he likes looking at the stars and sunsets. But everyone just assumes that he's the opposite purely because he is greaser. But there aren't only stereotypes for the greasers. The greasers think that Socs are just snobby rich kids who like to get drunk and beat people up because they are bored in their perfect and privileged lives. But Cherry shows Ponyboy that “Things are rough all over” and that the greasers are not the only ones who have a hard life. But Pony and the other greasers didn't know that as they would pre-judge all the Socs. Stereotypes prevented the greasers and Socs from getting along. They thought that were different but in reality they aren't, both groups on the West-side watch the same sunsets anyways.

2) What is Robert Frost suggesting with each use of this type of imagery?

Some examples of what Robert Frost is suggesting with this type of imagery is when it says “Nature's first green is gold/ Her hardest hue to hold”, nature is a symbol for life and its first green is when a plant first grows and its gold like a child's first years on earth. It's “hardest to hold” because it does not last long. Another example would be “Her early leaf’s a flower/ But only so an hour”, the flower symbolizes childhood and how it isn't long and can seem as short as an hour. With the lines “Then leaf subsides to leaf/ So Eden sank to grief” it talks about the circle of life and how when one leaf falls another grows, just like how when one person dies, another is born. When the author says “So dawn goes down to day/ Nothing gold can stay” he means that a sunset is like rebirth and that it comes and goes but does not stay forever, just like gold.

How this poem can relate to the Outsiders is that it ties into Ponyboy’s character development. In the beginning of the novel, Ponyboy is told that he doesn't use his head and that he doesn't see his potential. He doesn't realize he is in his “golden years' '. And he doesn't understand that Darry is trying to give him the opportunity to go to University, something he was unable to attend. In the end Ponyboy realizes that he does have potential, he’s smart, he can do incredible things and get out of his terrible life because it's not meant for him. He can share his story for all the other boys like him out there. Other boys like Johnny and Dally. Johnny’s last words to him were “Stay Gold Ponyboy ''. Johnny was telling him to never change because he’s special and what he has is rare and may not last forever. He wants Ponyboy to stay innocent , something the rest of the gang lost and is now long gone.

4) Write a theme statement that focuses on this poem and what you have read so far in the novel.

I believe that the theme of this poem is how your childhood can’t last forever and that is something beautiful that you should value. This relates to The Outsiders because of Ponyboy and his coming of age journey throughout the novel. For example, the poem talks about how childhood is something that is precious but sadly does not last long. We see that in the novel, Ponyboy's childhood is coming to an end, especially after witnessing the deaths of Bob, Johnny and Dally. He is in his “golden years” which won't last forever and he needs to use his head to realize that so he can achieve the life he deserves. In the end he finally realizes this and decides to use his knowledge, creativity and intelligence to help other boys like him realize that as well.
