How do you feel towards the people of Waknuk? What makes you say so?

I feel that the people of Waknuk is racist towards Blasphemies just because they are not the "Image of God" and are "segregated from the society and sterilised" so that no more Deviations are produced by them. This is because due to their fear of Blasphemies and making a set of strict-religious related rules/laws, this causes their betrayal to their loved ones, exposing their hypocrisy and ludicrousness in order to make the country filled with pure people and have the Image of God. As a result of their lack of change and diversity, it causes sufferings that some Waknukians people (like David, Petra, Sophie, Rosalind and Michael), making it look like they are the bad people, when in fact, it is the opposite. This makes me feel enraged by their behaviour because the Waknukians' people actions makes me feel that the Blasphemies are in the wrong for their presence in Waknuk.

Explain your choice with examples from the text.

The belief with the greatest impact on the community of Waknuk should be, " Any creature that shall seem to be human but is not formed thus is not human. It is neither man nor woman. It is blasphemy against the true Image of God, and hateful in the sight of God". There are other more enlightening beliefs, such as "God created man in His image. And God decreed that man should have one body, one head, two arms..." and so on, but people in Waknuk tend to only negatively think of others who are a disfiguration and a blasphemy towards God. This can be seen as Josphe Storm, David's father, always took the offenses of the blasphemy towards God, and went too far extends like slaughtering and burning them.

Their society is built on fear and strict conformity, which leads to cruel and unfair treatment of anyone who doesn’t fit their narrow idea of "normal."They strongly fear anything different, which makes them hostile towards "deviations." This is evident in how Sophie, a young girl with an extra toe, is forced to flee, and in Joseph Strorm’s angry reaction to David’s innocent comment about having an extra hand.

Their obsession with genetic purity is concerning as they destroy crops, animals, and even exile people who don’t meet their strict standards. They justify this with religion, but it shows they care more about conformity than compassion.

Explain your choice with examples from the text.

The belief that has the greatest impact on the Waknuk community is Tribulation. The Tribulation is a nuclear holocaust sent by Gods which can be seen from "God sent Tribulation". This nuclear holocaust destroyed the Old People. This instills an immense sense of fear of the Tribulation happening again which will end the Waknukians' lives. This allows them to agree with the drastic and restraining laws of reporting any Deviations, burning "imperfect" crops and more. This brings a significant impact on their day-to-day life. For example, Sophie was banished to the Fringes as a young girl and must suffer harsh conditions. This is seen from "unusually dirty, and with very ragged clothes". Hence, I think the belief which brought the greatest impact would be Tribulation.

This is because even though they may be family members or close ones, they do not show mercy to them and even remove them from the town. The colour red also shows the blood sweat and tears put in to try and survive in this town, trying their best to not get removed. It also shows the burning passion to those who try their best to protect their loved ones.

This colour also shows the lack of empathy people have for the deviations, this creates an apprehensive environment.

The colour grey is a fitting colour for Waknuk because, although the people believe they are pure, their view of the world is not as clear-cut as they think. They see everything as either black or white (deviations or 'normal' human beings), refusing to acknowledge anything in between. This rigid mindset causes them to overlook the complexities of life and ignore the flaws in their own beliefs. By focusing on purity, they fail to recognize the grey areas that truly define human nature

White often symbolizes purity and innocence, which Waknuk claims to be, but this is not the case. Their purity has been blown to the extreme and has become fanatical rigidity.

On the other hand, Black can represent the oppressiveness of their societal beliefs and the inherent cruelty. While it does indeed highlight the dangers, it overemphasizes the negativity of Waknuk without acknowledging their virtues.

Therefore, I think Gray best represents Waknuk's beliefs. It is the middle ground between white and black, symbolising the ambiguity of Waknuk's ideology.

Which belief do you think had the greatest impact on the Waknuk community? Explain your choice with examples from the text

I think that the belief that impacts the Waknuk community the most is the belief of "God's Image". Their whole life is dependant on the Image of God, from crops to animals and even humans are affected by this. The humans are considered a hateful sight and a "Blasphemy" to God's Image. While animals and crops are "Offences", the punishment for being a "Deviation" is death. Waknuk is known for being a 'pure' town, they hold so much pride in there being no Deviations as they execute them all. To them, purity is the most important this is shown in "any creature that shall seem to be human, but is not formed thus is not human. It is neither man nor women. It is a blasphemy against the true Image of God, and hateful in the sight of God". This monologue is said by the priest every Sunday to drill it into the people's minds that Blasphemies are not human. This holds the greatest impact as it controls everyone in the community, it holds their and other peoples lives above them to show them what would happen if they did not fit God's Image. Without this belief Waknuk would no be the way it is in the story, it would have other people who are Deviations and the people would not live in fear of dying if they were different.

Their rigid conformity and fear-based society result in the harsh and unjust treatment of everyone who doesn't meet their limited definition of "normal."Their intense aversion to anything unusual makes them antagonistic towards "deviations." Why did you decide on the colour?

I think the colour that best represent the beliefs of Waknuk are white and grey. I chose white because the book talks about purity and how people in the book must fit the True image of god. It mentions that only people who are pure is accepted in the real world and anyone who is seen as a deviation and not pure it banished from the town. I also chose grey because Waknuk reminds me of a cold, scary and strict atmosphere and environment. It has a scary atmosphere as people in Waknuk live in fear every day as some of them are deviations and they are afraid of what consequences they may have if the others discover their secret. This conveys a dull atmosphere and conveys that the people in Waknuk have an uneasy life.

Which belief do you think has the greatest impact on the Waknuk community? Explain your choice with examples from the text.

I think that the belief that has the greatest impact on the Waknuk community is the idea of genetic purity, which is the idea that everyone should look and be the same according to what they believe is "God’s image." In Waknuk, any kind of mutation or difference in a person is seen as evil or unnatural, and these people are treated as outcasts or even killed. For example, in the story, any child born with a mutation is called a “Deviation” and is either sent away or killed. David grows up learning that these differences are wrong, and he’s taught to fear and hate them. When he realizes he has a telepathic ability, he begins to understand how dangerous his society’s rules are as he is a "Deviation". This belief in genetic purity shapes how everyone behaves in Waknuk. People are scared of anything that doesn't fit the "normal" image, which leads to fear and even cruelty. It is a huge part of the reason why characters have to hide who they really are and why the community does not feel connected. The need for everyone to be the same creates a lot of tension and fear, not only shapes the laws and customs of Waknuk but also affects the Waknuk community, influencing their actions and their relationships.

Waknuk is a community where they have a lot of power when they come together as one with their beliefs in god and the "true image" as if u are not born as how they see as the "true image" they have have the power to kill u if u are a deviation , it is also how dangerous as almost any impurity could cause u to be killed by the community and the love for their religion and their god is a true and strong love as they are really strict about all their religion's rules and regulation.
