  • Born on March 7, 1922 in Padang West Sumatra
  • He died due to alzheimer's disease on July 2, 2004 at age 82
  • When he was a teenager he went into the jungles of Sumatra and had a close call with a tiger. This inspired him to write the novel Harimau! Harimau!
  • When Japan occupied Indonesia in 1942, he began translating international news for the Japanese army
  • His father was a Dutch appointed administrator
  • Senja di Jakarta (Twilight in Jakarta) was the first Indonesian novel ever to be translated into English

  • First Indonesian to be given the Magsaysay Award for Journalism and Literature --> received the award in 1958 while he was under house arrest 
  • The co-founder and editor of Indonesia Raya, a newspaper devoted to the exposure of corruption during President Soekarno’s reign. The newspaper was founded in 1949 and continued to run throughout the 1950s, and the writers were known to be critical of President Soekarno’s politics to the extent that people thought Mochtar and his fellow editors were US supporters. (During his reign, Soekarno wanted to make Indonesia independent of international interference, so the president banned most imports from other countries, especially the USA) 
  • Unfortunately, the newspaper was banned in 1956 and Mochtar was put into house arrest for nine years.
  • He joined the Antara News Office that was established in 1937 by Adam Malik. His fluency in English made him a translator.
  • Mochtar was known for his strong anti-leftist views, meaning that he thought inequality was inevitable for society. So when a leftist author Pramoedya Ananta Toer received the Magsaysay Award in 1996, Mochtar returned his Magsaysay Award in protest.
