The short story The Gift of the Maji relates to the essential question 'What are the special bands that link us to the family, friends, pets, and communities by showing how one acts when he has a family of his own? Della and Jim loved each other very dearly. They would give up there most valuable item for the other person. Della gave of he hair that Jim loved so much for a chain for his watch he praised so much. She first when to sell her hair:"Will you buy my hair?"(O'Henry, 60). Then she found it:"It was a gold watch chain, very simply made. Its value was in its rich and pure material" (O'Henry, 72 to 73). When she got home and made dinner for Jim she thought he loved her less without her hair. In reality, it was just the combs he bought for her:"I want you to understand me, Dell," He said. "nothing like a haircut could make me love you any less. But if you'll open that, you may know what I felt when I came in"(O'Henry, page 5). The loved each other so much they were willing to make sacrifices for each other.

The short story, The Censors connects to the essential question 'What are the special bands that link us to the family, friends, pets, and communities by showing how one acts when he has a family of his own? Juan had a huge connection with his girlfriend Mariana. He wanted to send her a letter without it getting censored, so she didn't get hurt or even killed because of it. His plan was to get a job at the censor's:"This was Juan's sound plan when he, like many others, applied for a consor's job--not because he had a calling or needed a job: no, he applied simply to intercept his own letter, a consoling but unoriginal idea"(Valenzuela, 32 to 35). Juan loved his girlfriend he was willing to risk getting in trouble to keep her safe from his letter.

The Prisoner Who Wore Glasses

The short story, The Prisoner Who Wore Glasses, relates to the essential question of ‘What are the special bands that link us to the family, friends, pets, and communities by showing how one acts when he has a family of his own. Brille acted differently because: “He had twelve children and his mind traveled back that evening through the sixteen years of bedlam in which he had lived”(Bessie Head, 76 to 77). This means since Brille has 12 children he feels he needs to stick up for the rest of the span when he dropped the cabbage. Then they were all punished: “All right.” said Hannetjie. “The whole Span goes three meals off.”(Bessie Head, 53). When the warder gave them tobacco and was caught stealing fertilizer Brille made a deal because he had a wife and children when Hannetjie could have gotten fired. Brille made a deal with Hannetjie that stated that he needed to be a good warder and Brille will make sure he keeps his job. Their exact request was: “We want a good warder because without a good warder we won’t be able to manage the long stretch ahead.”(Bessie Head, 173 to 174). The Prisoner Who Wore Glasses relates to having bonds because people with the similar situations look out for each other because they understand.
