One Step Closer to Justice by

Patrisse Khan-Cullors and Asha Bandele spoke against injustices in their community in the book “When They Call You A Terrorist; A Black Lives Matter Memoir.” Thus inspiring us to create a class discussion on how we can create change in our community.

Students in Professor S. Ashena's U100 Class (#20779) each answered the question, "How could you stand up to injustice and create change in your own community?"

See our responses below:

These biases may relate to race, gender, sexuality, and age. While self-reflecting we can influence our thinking through news broadcasts, newspapers, books, and personal experiences from those being oppressed and harassed. This enables us to overcome any prejudices we may have.
Pamela Jacinto

I believe I could stand up to injustice by being a just person myself to those around me. To become a just person, you have to educate yourself and others that don't understand the systematic inequality around us. This starts by patiently teaching and influencing people to stand up for their rights and listening to those who have been personally impacted by injustice. In order to make a change, people as a society have to realize that white supremacy exists and there are minorities who need to be heard.
- Sofia Mora

One method that I use when standing up to injustice is engaging myself with groups who stand for my similar morals or stances. When you stand with people you feel a connection with, it can provide a strong sense of empowerment and inclusivity. Often times it feels daunting to take on an issue on your own, so when you are united in a group it disperses the amount of responsibility evenly.
-Donovin Miller

Teaching others and myself how to stand up for the wrong things in society and use our voice for what we can. Going to protests and making sure justice and peace is something I myself can do and others can as well to be able to make injustice in society. Lastly, communication is another way things can be changed, a community can come together to discuss the issues going around and figuring out ways to overcome these obstacles as a community can always be helpful in many different ways. We can all make change in our ways differently, as long as change is made is what makes our community better overall.

- Wendy Dominguez

The way I stand up for injustice has to be by not only standing up for those who can’t stand up for themselves but always standing up for what is right. Another way to stand up to injustice would have to be by learning new things like social issues and issues just going around the world that we could learn and we can spread awareness for them. We can all come together to help spread awareness for any injustice going on and we can make a difference.
-Erick Vasquez
