Alvin Dewey's, the main officer working on the Clutters murder, wife asks him if they will ever return to a "normal life," Their life as of this chapter is nonstop calls, tips, red herrings, clues, and trying to piece everything together. The word "normal" is important because it reinforces Mrs. Dewey's desire to not have the case be the main thing of her life and marriage with Mr. Dewey.

The reveal that there are special people in Dick's life that will never know of the horrors that happened in Garden City is heartbreaking. These very well could be fake people. Made up loved ones to cope with the fact that they are alone. If they are not, however, it really makes Dick a less likeable character. "Not in this life" shows how Dick has shied away from an innocent an loving life to one of murder and bloodthirst.

Bonnie Clutter's brother, Howard Fox, writes a letter to the townspeople of Garden City thanking them for being supportive. This letter, however, appears to contrast but complement the ideas mentioned in chapter 5. Chapter 5 took place in a funeral, where Nancy's friend Susan Kidwell said that there is no possible way to bring back the family because the truth is they are dead. Fox, having published this letter after the wedding of the surviving Clutter daughter, Beverly, mentions how wanting the killers dead is not a main focus, as the family is dead and "taking another life cannot change it."

"there must be something wrong with us" is Perry's acknowledgement of his and Dick's wrongdoings, them murdering the Clutter family.
