An Extra Friendly Neighbor

One hot summer afternoon Barbara Simmons fell on the side of the road while checking her mail. Simmons, who is 78, called for help for nearly 30 minutes with no luck—until Thor heard her. The Pitbull-Rottweiler mix that belongs to her neighbors gently approached Simmons to investigate the situation. Once he saw that she was in danger, he ran home and alerted his owners that something was wrong. When they didn’t respond right away, he ran back to where Simmons was laying with his owners in tow. They called 911 and the EMT who arrived on the scene told Simmons that Thor probably saved her life.

Thor has also saved his family’s chickens from a fox and survived being bitten by a copperhead snake, his family said.

The mother says Winnie started meowing and scratching her to get her to wake up. When she did, she was barely able to call 911 and delusional when the police arrived.Winnie’s owner said “If it wasn’t for Winnie, screaming and hollering and carrying on, we wouldn’t be here today.”The family thinks the carbon monoxide came from a broken gas powered sump pump in their basement, and officials said if the cat had waited another 5 minutes, the outcome would have been horrible and most likely a coroner case instead.

In 2005, a 12-year-old girl was abducted and beaten by seven men attempting to force her into marriage with one of them. The girl was missing for a week when she was found guarded by three lions. Policemen say that the lions “stood guard until we found her and then they just left her like a gift and went back into the forest.” If it weren’t for these lions, the girl’s fate most likely would have been far worse.

California resident Kevin Hines knows that he is lucky to be alive after jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, during a severe bout of mental illness: “Here are the facts: on September 25th, 2000, due to bipolar disorder and serious psychosis, I jumped off of the Golden Gate Bridge. I was nineteen years old and after leaving the Bridge, my first thought was that I had made a terrible mistake. Miraculously, I survived – and despite my severe injuries, I was able to reach the surface of the water. Upon my resurfacing, I bobbed up and down in the frigid waters surrounding me. Then, something brushed by my legs. I feared it was a shark come to devour me whole. I tried to punch it thinking it might bite me. However, this marine animal just circled beneath me, bumping me up.”

A passerby, who saw that the animal in question was a sea lion, quickly called for help. A rescue team was able to get to Kevin on time and pull him from the water, but it is doubtful that he would still be alive today had the helpful sea lion not kept his head above water.
