In order to do that, she must describe the setting to show what kind of environment that they are living in. She describes how they are known as "greasers" and they don't come from much compared to the "socs". This helps develop the feeling of friendship due to the fact that they don't have much, and need to look after each other. Lastly, using the plot, she develops the tightness of the character's relationships with each other, showing how much they care. For example, Dally found a place for Johnny and Ponyboy when they were in trouble. Or Dally got himself killed after Johnny died because he couldn't bear the fact that one of the people that he was close with, and cared about the most, died.
