To properly take care of a reptile, you first need to choose who your future scaly friend is gonna be! There are many different species and versions of different reptiles, all with their own unique needs and preferences. It's very important to pick out a pet that best suits your day-to-day life and lifestyle! Some pet reptiles need 24/7 care and can be pretty costly to own. When wanting to adopt a reptile, you should first plan a budget, preference list, and care schedule for what species will best suit YOU!

Step 2. Research!

Next, it's very important to research your future friend in great detail. As I said before, different species have different needs! These include special diets, sleeping behaviors, and overall personality. To take care of a reptile, it requires a great deal of knowledge to properly let your pet thrive. This makes knowing what your pet needs very important, as reptiles can be very fragile creatures, and making a small mistake can be very dangerous for your pet.

Having a proper setup for your cold-blooded company can be very important! This includes having a proper cage, supplements, and light setup! Most reptiles need large cages along with thermal lights that help replicate their natural habitat in the wild. Not only this, but most reptiles rely on supplements for proteins that they would normally only get in the wild. Some of these supplements include calcium, iron, and other vitamins! Making sure you have all of these things helps better prepare you for your new guy!

Along with supplements for your reptile, their diet can greatly affect their overall quality of life. Most reptiles eat things such as rich fruits, insects, or sometimes even small mammals! Making sure you have these things in a great supply can help keep your reptile healthy and happy! Currently, many shipping websites can help get your pet what they need and can help make sure you have a regular supply. You can also pre-order supplies from your local pet store, as most contain crickets or horn-worms which are a great source of protein for many different species.

Last but not least, making sure your new pet is hydrated is VERY important! Most reptiles get their water source from the plants they eat or they absorb water through their scales. Making sure you mist your pet daily (depending on the species) is greatly needed to ensure your pet's health! Many new pet owners struggle with this, as it can be hard to know if your pet is getting enough water intake. Setting up a mister in your pet's cage can help keep your reptile healthy and hydrated!
