Dally was proud of him. That was all Johnny had ever wanted” (149).   This is when he is dying that Dally says he is proud of him. Johnny stares at Dally in admiration after he gets mad at a cigarette. Also, when Johnny sticks up for the girls Pony is thinking about how hard it probably is for him, because Johnny practically worships Dally. When he leaves the group has almost no control, so when he gets there the group has almost disbanded. When he upsets Dally, Pony thinks of the fact that he doesn’t hit him because he is the gang’s pet. When Johnny dies the group basically falls apart as shown on “We couldn’t get along without him. We needed Johnny as much as he needed the gang. And for the same reason” (121). Well, tell her to leave me alone. For once" ---his voice broke--- "for once just to leave me alone." (104)  This shows why his family life is taking him over and making his life miserable. Also Ponyboy confesses that Johnny’s dad was always beating him up and his mom ignored him except for when she was mad, then she would yell at him. This causes him to be extremely clingy and protective of friendships. It shows that he is a protagonist when Pony is trying to make Johnny happy about the fact that his family is very abusive. “I mean, golly, Johnny, you got the whole gang." (45) This shows that he was a protagonist because he worked with the gang instead of against, and they love him. Also, a change shows in him, when he sticks up for the girls in front of Dally. This is one of his worst fears and He practically worships Dally. This shows why he is a round, dynamic, protagonist.

From the personality test it says that “People with the ISFJ personality type [Johnny] are private and very sensitive”  Johnny is very Reserved and quiet. This is shown on page 24 to 25 “But Johnny was the gang’s pet, and Dally just couldn’t hit him”  This shows that he is reserved and quiet because he has never really stood up for anyone so he is “the gang's pet…”. Also, just before he dies, he finally reveals how much he just is done with his mom.
