The MA in Dual Language Learning and Dual Language Learning certificate is important and should remain at CSUDH because it vital to teacher training. Through this program I have gained knowledge that is essential not only as a new teacher, but as a teacher in an urban school with majority students of color. Through this program I have learned various skills and strategy that are necessary and implemented everyday inside my classroom.

As a bilingual educator committed to multilingualism, bilingualism, and justice, I strive to create a culturally and linguistically responsive classroom that values and uplifts the diverse languages and backgrounds of my students. I am a highschool physical education teacher and I love to integrate students home languages into instruction through translanguaging strategies, bilingual resources, and inclusive curriculum materials that reflect their identities. I want to make sure all of my students feel welcome and engaged so that all students get an equal education . Through the medalla program I have learned how to work in collaboration with families and colleagues in order to make my classroom a safe space for all to learn and be able to ask for the help they need . It may seem that physical education seems to be the least of the worries for others however it is super important for students and families to learn why exercise and nutrition is important in their everyday lives . Therefore by including projects which students can make this connection is very beneficial. I continuously work to support language equity and culturally sustaining practices. I empower students by encouraging the maintenance and development of their home language, fostering pride in their cultural identity, and providing opportunities for their voices to shape the classroom environment. My teaching is grounded in the belief that every language is a valuable resource and that linguistic justice is essential to educational equity. This program helped me understand this on a deeper level and helped me find ways to include it into my practice as a teacher

There are many children that need the program and without bilingual educators, this will affect their learning and education . I was once a Spanish speaker only student and I remember not receiving any help because my teacher did not speak Spanish. I fell behind in school to the lack of resource that was not given to me when I was receiving my education . I came to CSUDH to get my bilingual authorization to help students and to help the community. If CSUDH takes the program away, there will many students that may miss out on their education due to lack of support for bilingual students.

Ms. Mata

Our community needs the DLL programs as much as the community needs their people and culture. People should have the opportunity and right to be able to speak, write, read and teach bilingualism. Values, culture, and language should continue to be enriched and protected in order for families, and communities to honor their identities. Being bilingual is a privilege. It is our voice, our identity and our culture. This is what represents us as human beings and not as separate people. We come together to share our love, our traditions, our history to those around us so that others too can learn from them and deeply understand and appreciate our language. My language is my family, my language is my ancestors but most of all my language is me

Our community NEEDS the DLL programs because they support children and students who grow up speaking a language other than English at home. These programs help students build strong skills in both their home language and English. it also helps them do better in school, stay connected to their culture, and feel confident in who they are. DLL programs also bring families closer to schools and give all children a better chance at future success! unlimited jobs and opportunities for Bilingual students!

As a bilingual educator my goal is to have an influence on every student! I will honor every student’s home language as a strength and not a weakness. I want to build a culturally sustaining classroom where all are welcome and all feel safe. As well as teaching students to become confident in who they are. Recognizing all languages develops literacy within the classroom in ALL. I will always show all my students that I stand behind other biases our community faces, because I will always ROOT for them, even if they feel the world is against them. Bilingual classrooms unite families and help make the school and classroom a better and safer place. I will implement parent/ guardian participation as long as I can!

diversity in education isn’t a threat, it’s a gift.

I serve as a role model for my students and my community of South Central LA. As a Plurilingüe Fellow for the last two years, I continue to find empowerment, inspiration, and community. I also know that credential and dual language programs, like the ones at CSUDH are needed to continue to teach the diverse populations in Los Angeles and beyond. We need knowledgeable bilingual educators to teach our children, so it is essential to preserve these programs.

Many students in a special day class are not given the opportunity to learn in dual language classes.

We need to give special education teachers the opportunity to receive their dual language certification in order to help support dual language learners. By defunding dual language programs, only hiders our students who already have a disadvantage because of their disabilities. Let’s not make a language barrier hurt them as well.

As a first year teacher, I have come across many English Learners throughout the day, and there are many more who enrolled in the school! I feel like every month I get someone new. I am fortunate that our ELA curriculum offers support for EL students, but what about other schools? And for how much longer? Being in this program really helped me as an educator be better prepared for when I continue to support English Learners as I continue to work on my own Spanish myself. Our community needs this program to stay because in the future, we will be facing the same kinds of students, and they will continue to need this kind of support. This program allows for us as educators to continue learning new strategies and explore the fundamentals of dual language learning, which we are noticing how impactful in Can be at our schools. More schools should follow in these footsteps, and having programs such as these is what is going to allow that. As a newer teacher, I am forever grateful for having spent my first year not only teaching but being a DLL student. This program has helped me implement new strategies into my own classroom that I will continue to use many more years to come.

Some of my commitments as a bilingual educator is to be able to have communication to school grandparents ,parents and guardians. Much of Californians are hispanic or speak the Spanish language. Having resources ready with availability to translation to parents makes a great difference to our communities, specially those being targeted through this government at these moments. Lower income schools and communities have strong ties to those teachers and admins who are there for them in harder times or provide the need at the moment.

This Spanish Program at CSUDH has strengthened my opportunities to create relationships and communities that make my students and families feel safe within school grounds. Many of these students come specifically to learn more and become more acquainted with other multilingual students. TK relies on kinder and up to 6th graders to have volunteers and within the classroom. Opening schools with additional language and community help only strengthens these relationships and helpers within school grounds.

The roles of community and families are vital; they serve as cultural brokers, language models, advocates, co-educators, and decision-makers. Our community needs Dual Language Learner (DLL) programs because they empower students to become biliterate, bicultural, and bilingual, fostering a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives and preparing them for success in a global society. By embracing and celebrating our students' linguistic assets, we not only enrich their educational experiences but also contribute to a more inclusive and just society, ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive academically and personally.

We are tired of fighting for the same causes, like administrators demeaning or threatening our programs and bilingual education. This is part of the historical marginalization and exclusion that Latinxs peoples have been subjected to in the United States for countless generations, and it is exhausting. There is plenty of research that sustains how beneficial biliteracy and multilingualism are for everybody involved: for the students, for the communities and families. There are no excuses we will ever justify as to why getting rid of what benefit us, what repairs all the unquantifiable damage that this country has done to our people, would be valid. At this point all we hear with the threat on dual language is “you don’t matter at the CSU level”, “your community matters less to us”. In the case of Dominguez Hills, a Hispanic serving institution, it really feels like a slap in the face.

When I committed to CSUDH I did so because it was a school that was brought fourth out of a moment of social justice and it DH was something that the community needed at that time. A moment where there were riots within communities were happening and chaos was breaking out, Dominguez became a haven for students seeking educational opportunities to flourish in underserved communities in the area. That is what the Dual Immersion program is. It serves the marginalized. It trains teacher who want to carry out that Dominguez hill legacy and serve others/communities that are underserved. How can you call yourself a school that advocates for social change when you threaten to remove programs that are to serve the community DH is in? Dual immersion programs is an asset to DH because it better equips students of color to serve other student of colors. Removing this program is conforming to traditional universities that serve only one population and keep marginalized students out. You are erasing why Dominguez Hills came to symbolize in the first place. We need bilingualism. Our stats within our schools show it. Dominguez is apart of contributing to that change so please don’t take that away.

We need DLL programs at CSUDH because many kids speak a different language at home, especially here in California. These programs help them learn in English and in their home language. This helps them do better in school and stay close to their family. It also helps them talk to more people and get good jobs when they grow up. DLL programs show that every language and culture is important. The DLL program at CSUDH helped me find what I want to do in life. I want other students to have the same chance. But if the program goes away, they won’t get that chance. Let students have this special chance, just like I did.

From my point of view, our community needs the Dual Language Master’s program because it helps educators like me better support students who grow up speaking Spanish or Indigenous languages, just like many of the families I work with. This program gives us the knowledge and tools to create classrooms where students’ home languages and cultures are celebrated, not pushed aside. It also prepares us to be leaders who can advocate for equity in our schools and challenge the push toward English-only instruction. I believe this kind of preparation is essential if we want to truly serve our multilingual students and help them thrive academically and culturally.

This isn’t just a program to me, it’s a promise to fight for and support equity and access in education. If this program is cut, it would limit our futures plus the students and families we are preparing to serve. I work as a TA in a dual language school and I see how students and families thrive in these spaces! Our communities deserve a stronger support for bilingual programs.

Maintaining a dual language learning program for teachers at our university is essential to fostering professional growth and advancing inclusive, culturally responsive education. As educators, continued development in bilingual teaching practices enables us to better support multilingual and English learners—students who benefit immensely from instruction that values and integrates both their native language and a second language.

Through dual language immersion, teachers gain the tools to build classrooms that not only promote academic success but also nurture respect for diverse cultures. Since language and culture are deeply interconnected, this approach empowers educators to create more inclusive learning environments and to prepare students to thrive in an increasingly interconnected and global society. Supporting dual language programs is not only an investment in student success, but also in the professional excellence of educators who lead with equity and cultural understanding.

Karina Lomeli

Our community needs bilingual education programs to prepared future teachers to better serve their communities.

We live in very diverse communities and our teachers need to be ready to support the students in those communities. Many times school is the only place where students feel safe and secure. It’s the only place where they feel successful. Part of that success is the teachers they have. When a teacher is able to support students in their native language it builds a relationship between them because there are no language barriers . When teachers are able to reach out to parents and family members it also creates a sense of connection. Bilingual teachers are very important because it helps students see the value and importance of being bilingual.

This initiative not only equips students with the linguistic and cultural competencies necessary in our diverse society, but also affirms the identities of historically marginalized communities. Bilingual education fosters representation, narrows achievement gaps, and empowers future educators and current educators to serve linguistically diverse populations with equity and respect. Sustained investment in this program is essential to building a more just, inclusive, and representative educational system for all.

The reality is that we are a multilingual people. We are raising the people who will take care of us and our planet. And it’s a numbers game: in order to get the most people to be te best they can be (whether as teachers, doctors, mechanics, activists, or anything else) you have to expose and educate from an early age. If you “preselect” who has access to a better education too soon, you are immediately limiting yourselves to smaller and fewer numbers.

Inclusion means giving access to great education from the earliest possible. Whether to bilingual students, deaf students, fully abled, and so on. In order to have a rich, loving, and functioning society, we need to be able to relate to who our students are. In Los Angeles….. MOST students ARE at least bilingual in some way. If most our students are bilingual, then our teachers should be too.

Being part of the bilingual authorization is one way I’m bringing justice and equity to the community. Brining an ethic of care, authentic cariño, to my students and families and putting their needs above anything else. That’s me being part of the community I live in. ❤️💪🏽

The reason I became apart of this program is to be a voice for those students that are bright, intelligent, and curious but are bounded by the language they speak that others may not understand. I want to be that person in their lives that keeps their spark of learning. There has been many times in my experience where people have talked down to my mother because they don’t think she’s smart enough to understand because of her accent, or because of where she is from, but when I hear my mother speak in the language most comfortable for her, I am able to see all the wisdom she holds in her thoughts but are constrained by the words she doesn’t know in English. I want to carry this into my classroom where I listen to my students and hear the wisdom they have and be the person they can come to with any questions they may have. BILINGUALISM IS A POWER THAT ONLY THE STRONG POSSESS!

During my time as a tutor at a high school, I saw first hand the need for bilingual educators. There were very few educators who students could turn to for help. For this reason, I've committed to becoming a bilingual educators myself. If CSUDH cuts this program, it would rid not only me, but other future educators of that opportunity. Students like the ones I worked with will continue to be neglected.

As a future educator, my commitments for action for multilinguilism, biliteracy, and justice are to promote academic excellence by celebrating linguistic and cultural awareness. As a bilingual educator, communities and families will play important roles because they can help build a partnership that can influence and support learners. Our community needs the CSUDH MA in Education: Dual Language Learning Program and the Dual Language Learning Certificate because they provide educators with the knowledge and skills to help the children and youth of our community succeed, which benefits the community. Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, no matter what language they speak. We live in a multilingual world.

As a bilingual educator, I’m committed to being both a teacher and an advocate for multilingual learners. I will create a classroom where students' identities, languages, and cultures are valued and celebrated. I will intentionally include students’ home languages and lived experiences in my instruction to build bridges between school and home. My goal is to support students in developing and using both languages, encouraging translanguaging, critical thinking, and pride in who they are. I will always stand up for their right to learn in more than one language and ensure they feel seen, heard, and respected.

Families and communities are essential partners in my work as a bilingual educator. I build strong relationships with them through open communication whether by email, in person, or other ways that meet their needs. We work together as a team to support each child’s academic, social, and emotional development. I learn from families about their children’s strengths and interests, and I invite them to participate in classroom life or support learning at home. Together, we create a shared commitment to help students thrive in both languages.

The CSUDH MA in Education: Dual Language Learning program and certificate are important because our communities need more teachers who are prepared to support bilingual students and their families. These programs prepare educators to value and build on students’ home languages instead of replacing them. With this training, we can help students grow strong in both languages, support families who speak languages other than English, and promote dual language pathways from early grades through high school. This work helps create bilingual, biliterate students who are confident, capable, and ready to thrive in a multilingual world. It also opens doors for more inclusive and equitable education in our communities.

The dual language program has opened so many opportunities for bilingual individuals around the world; within those individuals, myself included.

As a bilingual educator, I strive to provide an environment in which students can speak their language with confidence and comfort. This being something that is extremely important for the future in a bilingual individual's education.

I believe that the program should remain at CSUDH because it allows many emerging educators take a route that is very suiting for them. I knew from the very beginning of my college career that I wanted to be a teacher. But not until I learned about the dual language program and what they strived for, did I find a love and fascination to it. It allowed me to embrace being a bilingual individual. Someone who spoke, thought, and loved in more than one language.

In the dual language program, we have planted the importance of connection within the community of each and every student that will be in our classroom. I always asked myself the question; how can I make my students feel like their culture and their community is being embraced? That is something that I had the privilege of learning through the dual language program in CSUDH.

The Dual Language Learner programs will help us as educators become the teachers we once had or desperately needed—those who are equipped to meet the diverse needs of our students. Taking these programs away would not only diminish the quality of education we receive, but it would also limit our ability to serve the students who need us the most. As a university with nearly 70% of Latinos as its student demographic, it is a shame that some of the very programs that these same students attending CSUDH might have benefited from in schools and that might have helped them get to this step in their education—and that students like me are clearly interested in—are at risk of being eliminated. This would be a step backward for the entire educational community and would further limit the educational opportunities available for future educators like me. To raise awareness and gather community support, I created a petition to preserve the Dual Language Programs at CSUDH. You can view the petition here: https://www.change.org/p/preserve-csudh-dual-language-programs-for-future-educators

I respectfully urge you to reconsider this decision and to continue supporting the Dual Language programs that have empowered so many of us to become the educators our diverse communities need.
