From the Callander Heritage Society Collection - Port of Menteith Station opened on the 26th of May 1856, this station was in fact situated much closer to Arnprior, it lay over 3 miles south of Port of Menteith and was the third stop on the Forth & Clyde Junction line. The name and location led to so much confusion that the Lake Hotel at Port of Menteith had to draw attention to this anomaly in their advertisements. The hotel also provided transport to and from the station for guests arriving by train. During World War II, the station was used as a drop off point for ammunition that was being stored on Inchmahome Island on the lake of Menteith. The ammunition was transported to the island in War departments boats berthed on the lakeside, the road between the station and the lake became a “Restricted” area.

The stations were almost all at some distance from the villages they were supposed to serve, and passenger services over the whole route only lasted until 1934.

This shows the station building from the north-east. This was of the company's standard type, with a station-master's house above the booking office. Note the timber-faced platform, a sign of economy in construction.

After closure of through passenger services, the line was split into three. The middle section was retained as part of the Aberfoyle branch, open for passengers and goods, and the ends were worked as freight-only branches until the late 1950s. This building is now a house.

(sourced via Callander Heritage Society)

This loch is situated south west of Callander on the road to Port of Menteith. On an island in the middle of Loch Ruskie, now submerged, was the stronghold of Sir John Menteith, who had inherited these lands from his father Walter Menteith. Sir John Menteith built a Peel castle on this small island along with several building and stables situated on the shore of this small lochan. Sir John Menteith was accused of treachery by the Scottish people for the betraying of William Wallace shortly after his momentous victory at the battle of Stirling Bridge. Sir John Mentieth was the sherif of Dunbartonshire and held Wallace at Dumbarton before delivering Wallace to the English. There would have been outrage at the actions of Sir John Mentieth and unsurprisingly nothing remains of Ruskie castle, even the island lies silently submerged below the murky waters of Ruskie, as if to deny its part in Scotlands turbulent past.

(sourced via Callander Heritage Society)

The Lake of Menteith, formerly known as the Loch of Inchmahome has the distinction of being Scotlands only Lake. This its owes to a Dutch mapmaker who mistakenly attributes Laigh (meaning lowland) of Menteith to the Loch itself rather than the surrounding area. (In the Blaeu's 'Atlas of Scotland', published in 1654, it is referred to as "Loch Inche mahumo") The Lake of Menteith is home to one of Scotland's famous priories: Inchmahome. Sitting on the largest of the three islands, the priory was established in 1238 by Augustinian canons. The impressive remains of the priory still stand today and they were visited by some of Scotland's famous historic figures.

It is reputed that Robert the Bruce visited the priory on three occasions: 1305, 1308 and 1310. In 1358, the future King Robert II visited the island. Its was also here that 4 year old Mary Queen of Scots took shelter in 1547, prior to her flight to France. During the 19th century the priory became a popular tourist attraction, pictured above is the steam boat that belonged to the Lake Hotel and provided trips to the island for its guests.

Ben Gullipen is situated on an open parallel ridge North East of Port of Menteith. These ridges are a direct result of the geological activity along the Highland Boundary Fault, which makes the natural and cultural transition between the Highlands and Lowlands.

The walk up this hill normally starts close to the popular tourist town of Callander on the A81 Glasgow Road.

It comprises a hike upwards from around 60m above sea level to 414m so you should be prepared for a bit of a challenge but the path is good and easy to find. The summit hosts a selection of Radio Masts.

Cardross Bridge is good example of an 18th century bridge and a significant feature in the landscape. Although partially rebuilt there has been a bridge at this strategic position since at least the late 18th century. It connects the parishes of Kippen and Port of Montieth, by carrying the B8034 public road over the River Forth. This early bridge has good stonework detailing such as prominent and well detailed cutwaters.

The bridge was built by the government from the revenues of forfeited lands. This is reference in a panel to the S face of the E abutment, with inscription: "THIS BUILDING ERECTED A.D. 1774 / HIS MAJESTY / GAVE IN AID TO IT OUT OF THE ANNEXED / ESTATES £250 STR. / VIATOR / TUTO TRANSEAS / SIS / MEMOR / REGII / BENEFICII" (Traveller, may you cross safely. Be mindful of the Royal benefaction). This panel is now obscured (possibly removed) by an early 21 century gabion wall.
