My name is Gavin Blunn and I am planning to apply for creative Media because This is something have wanted to do the past 7 years of my life, which started when I began uploading some of the poorest quality of videos onto the internet , but slowly that changed and begun improving and I began working on some things that were a little bit more high quality and with this I was trapped in a love hate relationship with camera. Love when I got them and hate when I broke them. This love continued as a teenager where I worked for my moms independent business managing videos of promotional content that would then go onto social media platform. Moving onto doing drama after this for GCSE’s where I was able to see the other side, being in front of the camera instead of behind It and finding how to understand actors more on set and see there problems as well as my own problems that could occur behind the scenes. Now I am in college where my footage has become better than it ever has been and I have both begun editing work for several small influencers and worked for small bands in the UK, which have all helped me as with all of these skills I have not just managed to work out how to work for clients in an achievable time frame, but I also know how to deal with client feedback and give them the best work.  

As anyone who reads this can see media has been a ginormous part of my life so far and I know it will continue to be a big part of my life and I want to continue it at a university. As I began to get into media from an early age I learnt the most important skill, trial and error. Especially when it comes to cameras, it’s a quirk of the industry for nothing to work first try. Trial and error is in the business’ blood and you either learn it the easy way or the hard way. I learnt it the hard way after trying to work out why I had such an odd looking lenses at 10 years old. Spoiler alert it was because it was a fisheye lens. Moving on from that I learnt the skill of patience because god have I learnt that some clients have absolutely no idea what they want to do with the edit and it is your job to make sure it's perfect so the patience you must have when you are editing to let them critique and go through several drafts so you can have it all looking absolutely perfect for the client. I have also learnt a lot about live TV where I was able to apply the skill of always showing up to set with as much energy as possible, because you never know what that day will hold. When working on live tv you could be working on either documentaries or an actual live tv show where all cameras need to be connected to a vision mixer and as always in media, stuff goes wrong so the ability to be able to keep some sort of energy and positivity is vital when on set. Now I have learnt these skills and these skills are helpful to me but there is still things I must get to grips with and with the help of the university hope to be able to do that and be able to advance my skills in creative media production. 

At university I hope to achieve a lot with media. My main hopes split between either doing work as a freelancer or moving into the production of live TV. I want to do live TV because the interest of bing able to access the feeds of cameras that you have set up and those camera are going live to millions it’s the rush you get from that because all eyes are on the crew and this is where you can test the wills of any camera operator involved in it.

I am applying to study creative Media production because this is a passion, I have wanted to pursue for the past 7 years, which started when I began experimenting with video cameras and stop motion production. In these early stages of using cameras, I began to explore the concept of character, ideas and narrative development. Over time I began to understand the tools required to tell a story and through working with moving images I progressed from making short clips of film that showed a limited understanding of narrative to more ambitious projects that also showcased my technical ability.  

This love continued as a teenager where I worked for my mom's independent business shooting and managing videos of promotional content that would then go onto her website and social media platforms. When I did this I had to understand the type of audience she was leaning towards and since it was a hospitality business I had to please a lot of the public showing how we did things and had to lean into the aspect of being a mobile hospitality business and therefore made videos in several different locations like back garden where we had set up, some car parks and even fields. Now I am in college where my footage has become better than it ever has been and I have both begun editing work for small social media influencers trying to make a career and managing there YouTube channels and TikTok feeds, which have all helped me as with all of these skills I have not just managed to work out how to work for clients in an achievable time frame, but I also know how to deal with client feedback and give them the best work.

I am applying to university because I want to meet new people who could help me develop existing skills that I would be able to bring into work and I want to improve my knowledge of how the professional world of media works. I also want to be able to develop team working skills that could make me more useful to teams when I begin to work in the professional media world. Along with this I hope to improve my academic skills like researching and report writing, two things that could be useful to any business and is a transferable skill I could use very effectively when in the professional world. 

After coming to college, I continued to get work experience filming several sports events like a charity football match and a rugby match which helped a lot with my filming skills having to track object like the ball in play or a certain players reaction after having been given a penalty. This also helped me with learning how to be professional on set, having to co-ordinate with several other people from different industries when sorting out where my camera would go and who was getting other shots on the match field. When it came to the charity football match I also played a large role in the editing of it in which I worked on editing when there is several different camera angles with different pieces of footage that I was able to sync together using a multi cam setting in premiere pro. 

I now also have a part time job which I have been able to bring a lot of experience from as I was able to work on my teamworking and co-ordination skills from having to work with colleagues. I also managed to get a lot of leadership skills during this as I was coordinating with people above me to lead bar staff during shifts and teach new talent what to do on the bar and supervise them. This has been great in developing what I want to do when I go into a professional environment as I was able to show myself I can be a leader and I can work with a team. Finally through this job I showed I can keep myself
