In our general interactions, things were pretty informal and we had a pretty natural flow to how we all got along. My parents did have some very traditional views, and etiquette was always very important. We always had family dinner where the table was set, we had expected manners, and we were punished if we didn't adhere to these norms. It was even more formal when my Welsh grandma came to town where the house was always spotless and everyday life was done in a very specific, correct way. Especially as me and my siblings got older, instead of telling someone directly to do something, a generic statement or a passive aggressive comment would be used to identify an issue. I attended that church from the time my mom was pregnant with me, singing in the choir, until I moved to Utah for university at age 18. Christian values shaped our whole family culture and activities. I even attended the private Christian school associate with the church for my elementary years, as did my two older siblings. As a young child I spent a lot of time in time out for misbehaving (usually at the dinner table). My parents also spanked me, washed my mouth out with soap, took away toys or later my phone, and made me write essays about what I did wrong/what I learned. These options were selected in a way that felt arbitrary to me and didn't necessarily match with what I did. Humans are innately social creatures that understand it is unsustainable to try and survive alone. Families form to fulfill social and emotional needs as well as cultivate economic and personal stability and security. While these are shared characteristics, culture dictates the norms of family make up. This happens as result of cultural attitudes on how people ought to interact and what needs are present for one another to fulfill in the societal context. Beyond that, in individualistic cultures, family can be considered an aspect of self expression.
