The production of plastic water bottles in the U.S. alone creates 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide, a key greenhouse gas responsible for global warming.

For many bottled water companies, choosing a location with access to large markets for their company is more important than the quality of water.

Only 1 in 5 plastic bottles are recycled.

In 1976, the average American drank1.6 gallons of bottled water a year. that number has skyrocketed to Over 30.8 gallons of bottled water each 42 years later. In 2012 the total amount of bottled water sold in the US reached almost $12 Billion.

 

 

Industry group the Australian Bottled Water Institute estimates the industry is worth about $500 million a year. This equates to the sale of roughly  600,000,000 litres of water, 60% of which is sold in single-serve bottles. About one in five Australian households bought bottled water in 2004. Almost one in 10 households says it's their main source of drinking water.

But the health arguments for bottled water are overstated. The choice is not one between sugared drinks and bottled water, but between bottled water and tap water.

There is no evidence that bottled water is more ‘pure’ than tap water, but plenty of evidence to suggest that bottled water is costly: both for the cost and to the environment.
