In this type of warfare, soldiers fought each other from trenches (long narrow ditches). This type of warfare was introduced in early 1915 when opposing armies on the Western Front dug miles of parallel trenches to protect themselves from enemy fire. This wasn't quite an effective tactic as the armies using this kind of warfare traded huge losses of human life for pitifully small land gains. Furthermore, the life in the trenches was pure misery, the men had to go through many hardships like no fresh food, sleep being nearly impossible, and having the trenches filled with rats.

WWI: Austrian/Hungarian rulers Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie traveled to the capitol of Bosnia where they were fatally shot by 19 year old Serbian, Gavrilo Princip. Gavrilo Princip was a member of the Black Hand which was an organization that wanted to get Bosnia off of any Austrian rule. Since the assassin was Serbian Austria took it at hand to handle the issue with Serbia. This however created many problems for Serbia. Austria already had been prepared for war and was not going to negotiate with any of the offers Serbia had suggested. On July 28, Austria declared war. Russia , Serbia's ally also began preparing for war by mobilizing the German ( Austria's Ally) border. To Germany this was another declaration to war. Russia looked to it ally France for help, but by the second day of Germany's declaration of war to Russia it also declared war on France. We then see the emergence of the Central Powers which would consist of Germany and Austria-Hungary (Ottoman and Bulgaria would later on join). Contradicting the Central Powers the Allied Powers would consist of Russia, Great Britain and France ( and later on Japan and Italy). The cause of the war being the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife.
"The lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our lifetime."
WWII: In hopes of no joining the west Joseph Stalin had signed a non-aggression pact with Hitler in which Hitler promised him in exchange more land. In a secret part of the pact Germany and Soviet Union decided to split Poland among them.Hitler was quick in the conquering of Poland and his surprise attack took place on September 1, 1939. Which then lead to Great Britain and France declaring war on Germany.

Total War is when a country devotes all of their resources to go towards to war. In WWI these countries were Britain, Germany, Austria, Russia, and France. Governments took control of the economy, telling factories what and how of a product to produce, converting facilities to munition factories (military weapons, ammunition, equipment, and stores). Rationing happened due to short supplies. Governments suppressed antiwar activity, censored news about the war since the government thought reports of war would make people turn against it, and governments used propaganda to support the war.

The treaty of Versailles was made as a peace treaty for the 32 countries involved in WW1 which had a group who brought up major/important decisions known as the Big 4: Woodrow Wilson, Georges Clemenceau, David Lloyd George, and Vittorio Orlando. Woodrow Wilson had his fourteen points for peace he planned for the treaty, however the French and British had different ideas. In the end the treaty of Versailles used the fourteenth point of Woodrow Wilson thought of making the league of nations which would keep the peace between nations, it also put full accountability for WW1 on Germany, Germany had to pay reparations to the Allied forces for all damages caused, and Germany lost its territories in Africa. Ultimately the treaty of Versailles along with others that were made were harsh on Germany, which was what Woodrow Wilson was trying not to do in his fourteen points, and fueled Germany to have WW2 later on because Allies had all these treaties which forced Germany to repay and lose a lot.

Because of Homefront and men leaving to war, there were labor shortages needing people to work so they took on women to do jobs. Since people saw women were able to do hard labor with munition factories, men saw them as more equal. Women were able to gain the right to vote, with women's suffrage (right to vote in political elections) in law in many countries. Restrictive clothing and hairstyles abandoned, wearing shorter and looser garments and short hair. Wore makeup, drove cars, drank, and smoked in public. As women got more careers, more women got jobs in education, medicine, journalism, and other professions.

The United nations ( or UN as it is often called) is an international organization that includes 50 countries in total that was created after WW2 and its purpose was to protect the countries in it from conflict, discuss issues around the world, and come up with solutions to them like human rights. One big thing about the UN was basically it is group which in all the countries in it agreed to not fight or be aggressive to one another and if any one or group of them did all the rest would band together to stop the conflict/aggression. The UN's ideals of human rights was a set of standards where, "All humans beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights... Everyone has the right of life, liberty, and security of person". In the treaty of Versailles Germany was put all guilt on for the war with no help of recovery and was left in shambles after WW1, however after WW2 the U.S. instead this time, because they could follow through on their own terms, chose to specific criminals to punish instead of an entire country which they instead helped rebuild so in the case of Germany the U.S. punished high ranking Nazi's who suffered death by hanging and one person named Hans Frank was sentenced to life in prison because he showed remorse by saying, "A thousand years will pass and still this guilt of Germany will not have been erased." and just like he said the U.S. instead of running Germany into the ground again like WW1 even though Russia wanted to helped to reunite and help Germany.

WWII: About 40 million Europeans died after WWII. Great cities lay in rubble due to bombings. Many people were displaced and homeless. Some people went back to living in old but ruined apartments while others resorted to living in cellars or caves made of rubble. They had no water, electricity, or food. People went in search of their loved ones. Agriculture was disrupted from ruined land and few people remained to work the land. This provoked famine, and disease spread through the ruined cities. People went without coats and shoes for the winter. The US alone spent $288 billion, Great Britain spent $117 billion, France spent $111.3 billion, the USSR spent $93 billion, Germany spent $212.3 billion, and Japan spent $41.3 billion.

Genocide: Workers in death camps were forced to build gas chambers and were mercilessly beaten and mistreated. Morale and physical states of the prisoners suffered even more. Workers were sent to the gas chambers or were shot for disobeying. This was similar to World War I because just like the Ottomans with the Armenians, Germany targeted groups it didn't like and treated them just as cruelly

WW1- Militarism- is the policy of glorifying military power and keeping an army prepared for war. By 1914, all the Great Powers except Britain had large standing armies. Military experts stressed the importance of being able to quickly mobilize, or organize and move troops in case of war.
Alliances- The alliance system was designed to keep peace in Europe. This caused for 2 rival camps to be existed in Europe. One side was the Triple Alliance- Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. The other one was the Triple Entente- Great Britain, France, and Russia. This could have drawn all of the nations of Europe into war.
Imperialism- A policy in which a strong nation seeks to dominate other countries politically, economically, or socially. An example of this was when the quest for colonies sometimes pushed the European nations to the brink of war. As European countries continued to compete for overseas empires, their sense of rivalry and mistrust of one another depended.
Nationalism- Nationalism is the belief that people should be loyal mainly to their own nation, but also to the people they share culture an history. This was a factor in causing wars because it can cause intense competition among nations, which leads to them trying to overpower each other.

WW2- Militarism- Military leaders gained support and soon won control over the country. They did not restore a new system of government they wanted to restore traditional control over the government. Wanted raw materials, markets for goods, and more land so they wanted to conquer China.
Alliances- By giving Mussolini in Africa, Britain and France hoped to keep peace in Europe. Another alliance was the League of nations which included Germany, Japan, and Italy. The downside was that not many league members agreed with each other.
Imperialism- The Japanese army seized Manchuria because it was rich in iron and coal. Also Mussolini attacked Ethiopia.
Nationalism- Hitler and Mussolini sent troops, tanks, and airplanes to help Franco's forces.
