The article is about the use of stem cells and fetal tissue in scientific research. The article discusses the different ways in which stem cells can help in science. It states that many scientists believe that if it wasn’t for their fetal research they would not be able to conduct many important processes. It discusses the different advantages of using stem cells and other fetal tissues. The article states that the main advantage that stem cells have is that they can differentiate into anything, and that if they are used then many diseases can be cured. Also fetal tissues are essential in many vaccines used worldwide. The article also talks about the poor way in which the company Planned Parenthood promoted their harvest of fetal organs.

How Does this societal issue relate to what we learned in class?

The topic of stem cells was an important topic that we discussed in class at the beginning of the year under the topic of cell biology. The article discussed the ethical concerns that surround the use of stem cells, and explicitly mentions the use of dead fetuses. In my learning map this is also mentiond, “The ethical issues about this procedure are that lives are lost through the form of abortion and also that usually people don’t inform the patient from where this cells are coming from” (1.1: Introduction to cells ). The article also talked about the many different uses that Stem Cells have and their ability to differentiate into anything. This was also mentioned in my learning map, “The difference between embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells is that adult stem cells are specialized, meanwhile embryonic stem cells can help anywhere in the body because they are not specialized in one part” (1.1: Introduction to cells). This shows that stem cells and abortion where indeed mentioned in class.

My Position

After analyzing both points of view, I have come to the conclusion that abortion is wrong, but wasting stem cells afte the death of achild is worse. I believe that governments and scientists should not promote abortion, but as long as people continue performing abortions then they should get the best out of the situation. By using the already aborted fetus in order to help someone else is important because this way the baby did not die in vain. I wan to communicate that people shold not perform abortion, but as long as people continue aborting, scientists should use this in order to benefit the rest of the population. In the article the following quote supports my claim, “Using fetal tissue is not an easy choice, but so far there is no better choice” (Wadman). This shows that it is not easy to use stem cells because of the way of getting them, but they are an important part of science today. Another example is when the article states, “Abortions, which are performed at about half of Planned Parenthood’s 700 clinics, constitute 3% of its services. A handful of clinics in two states supply fetal tissue for research” (Wadman). This shows that not all fetuses are used for stem cells showing that many children are dying without fulfilling any purpose.
