Using your Diction Padlet for your book your job is to carefully examine the diction (word choice) in the assigned section. Search for words, phrases, and passages that are especially descriptive, powerful, funny, thought - provoking, surprising or even confusing. List the words or phrases and explain where you found them and why your selected them. Then, write your thoughts about why the author might have selected these words or phrases. What is the author trying to say? How does the diction help the author achieve his or her purpose? What tone do the words indicate? Share your findings (padlet) at your meeting. This website will be shared with Dr. Sigelakis as part of your literature circle portfolio. You must have at least two entries on Padlet.

When Nate enters the ticket raffle and gets selected to participate in "The SportStuff Million Dollar Throw", the book reads "Now the most famous thirteen-year old in America would get a chance on Thanksgiving night to make the throw of a lifetime." The word phrase "throw of a lifetime" clearly indicates that Nate is ecstatic at not just being famous across America, but also for the chance to help his parents get out of their financial struggles they are currently in by possibly winning a million dollars

Abby Going Blind

When the revelation of Abby's eye problems is first discussed in the book, the author makes a clear point to prove the emotional angst Nate is going through because of her suffering since they are very close friends. The phrase "how Abby's world was about to be as dark as a movie theater" makes it apparent that Nate is quite distressed about how Abby will be in the future because of her blindness. This quote is also powerful due to the fact that the first time Nate realized Abby was going blind was after she had a problem seeing in a movie theater when the lights went out and she couldn't move since she couldn't see where she was walking. This helps set a somber and solemn tone on
the overall atmosphere.

Chapter 7 starts off with the sentence, "Nate loves practice", which indicates that practice means a lot to him. The other also includes the sentence on page 43 "Nate wanted to be the most prepared guy out there", to show is determination. The author also mentions in chapter seven that Nate reads the coaches playbook "likes its studying for a final exam. Also, A lot of time he is competitive. Nate even states that "He's all about winning."

Nate was already having a pretty tough day because Abby had just left to go to her school for the blind. But, the day gets even worse when Nate cannot complete any of his throws, and his coach benches him. His team ends up winning, but he feels so sad because he could not help the team the way that he wanted. He is so sad that as soon as he gets home, he goes straight up to his room, eats barely anything for dinner, and doesn't watch his favorite team, The New England Patriots play.
