In the Mediterranean World in 33CE, the Roman Empire was in rule. During the rule of the Roman Empire, which lasted for 500 years, the Empire was one of the most powerful forces in the world and maintained control of large areas of the world. The main languages spoken during the rule of the Roman Empire included Greek, Hebrew, Latin and Aramaic. To communicate his messages and teachings, Paul walked, talked and preached to the people and during imprisonment in Ephesus, he wrote letters which now form some of the New Testament. During the period of Roman rule, the region was inhabited by Greeks; Hebrews, Jews and Galileans (from Israel), Medes (which reflects today’s regions of Azerbaijan and Kurdistan) and Elamites and Parthians (from today’s Iran). The transport system used by people in the Roman empire, including Paul, were advanced for their time, devised and built by the Romans.

Paul’s transition from Saul to Paul is significant for many reasons. Paul was brought up as a zealot Jew and saw the uprising of Christianity as a major threat. He was so opposed to Christianity, he decided to kill all Christians by stoning them. When trying to pursue a group of Christians, the bright light - a message from Jesus signifying a change and conversion - made Saul realise how wrong his actions were. Paul’s transition to Christianity is significant as he initially wanted to eliminate Christians. However, through a message and realisation from Jesus, he was able to see how wrong his actions were and change them for the better through preaching the messages of Jesus.

Paul visited many places during his travels, starting his first journey in Antioch’s seaport Selucia and finishing his third and final journey in Jerusalem. During his travels Paul visited many cities twice. His second journey started with him revisiting all the places he had been to in his first journey including Cyprus, Pamphylia and Pisidia. His second journey led him to preach in cities including Derbe, Lystra, Iconium, Phrygia, Galatia, Troas, Macedonia, Achaia, Athens, Corinth, Caesarea, concluding his journey in the Syrian Antioch. Paul preached to many groups while on his second journey, one of them being the Ephesians in Ephesus. A theatre in Ephesus where men often went for entertainment and that had excellent acoustics was where Paul was able to preach his message.

Over a period of 15 to 20 years, Paul wrote many letters to groups including the Romans, Philippians, Galatians, Corinthians, Thessalonians and Colossians. The purpose of these letters was to share the messages of Jesus’ teaching and the Good News along with building the Christian community through uniting people with a common faith and belief. The main message in Paul’s letters and preaching was that Jesus was the messiah and that because of his sacrifice we should let God, Jesus and the Christian community be in our lives.

When converted to the Christian faith the Jews believed that circumcision was a way to show their love and devotion to God. Paul pleaded to them that this was not the case and that they didn’t need to undertake any rituals or ceremonies to show their love to God, simply committing God to being in their life was enough.

There are many ways we can demonstrate God’s acts of humility in our lives today, these include; loving everyone equally no matter who they may be, putting others wellbeing’s and interests before your own and following in the actions and teachings set by Jesus.
