I believe Edward because he's obviously not had the right treament for a child to go and say to his mother " you're a f*ckoff" however this could just be showing Edward still being a childish mannered person. Despite this, Edward has also only just found his first relateable friends and now he's being forced to leave the neighbourhood because of them. In addition to this, Ed being high status and rich is usually deemed innocent and isn't irresponsible; this could be what caused him to want to throw the stones as a result of people presuming it wasn't him to do anything "bad"

Because he doesn't know any different, however Edward does which therefore means that Edward might have been more capable of making the correct decision. Mickey might not know any different because of his uneducated up bringing and his surroundings by his brothers and sisters. Therefore Mickey is less capable of knowing what is right and wrong compared to Edward that has had an educated upbringing with more attention, which may also link to why Mickey did it as he might of wanted the attention from his mother as early on in the play there was the quote that read "Thats because you're the youngest child' which shows that there are many kids and he is trying to get attention from his mother. Overall even though Edward was peer-pressured I feel that Mickey should have more sympathy as he doesn't know any better as not everyone was that privileged in 1980's

Amelia Cowie

I feel sorry for Edward Lyon due the fact that he is so uneducated. This is because he was told a swear word my Mickey and he went up to his mum and said it to her in a sentence that didn't make sense. This shows that he is uneducated because he was mad at his 'mummy' so called a swear word which is disrespectful anywhere so he clearly doesn't know how to treat others. The reader will be shocked as such a friendly, polite boy has just offended his mother and they will except Mrs Lyons to do something about Edward mixing with the other boys. The writer did this to show the context of 1980's Liverpool and to tell the reader that not may people were that posh and if you were you would stand out

I feel sorry for Edward because although he is well educated and is more likely to have a successful career in the future I think that he doesn't have much freedom or social skills compared to Mickey. Mrs Lyons is very overprotective because Edward is probably the only child she will ever raise. She doesn't want Edward socialising with any of Mrs Johnstone's kids and will even move out of that neighbourhood just to make sure they never see each other again. Therefore, Edward's freedom is very limited as for Mrs Lyons makes most of Edward's decisions without considering what he wants. Also, I think that Mickey has a slight advantage because Mrs Lyons can be very strict, for example when she argued with Edward about him playing with Mickey, Edward could find her quite intimidating and he could become more timid, which will effect his social skills. As for Mickey, his
social skills will only improve because he has a lot of siblings to interact with.

Such as when he said "f@*$off" to his "mummy". This shows that because he hasn't ebb exposed to behaviour and words like this he doesn't know when is the appropriate time to say it or whether it is ok or not. This makes me feel sorry for him because he has embarrassed himself and done something considered socially wrong however he doesn't understand why.

He seems to have put too much trust in them and thus he is getting into trouble for things he doesn't understand. He was the unfortunate boy who wasn't picked by Mrs Lyons. Though some people may argue that he was lucky as he is able to grow up with his real mother, you need to consider all the things he will be unable to do all because of his poor origin. In the segment of the book where Edward is pressured in to throwing the rock at the window he was unaware that he was being manipulated by the other children whilst it appears that the other children we aware that they were appling pressure to each other by "daring" each other and calling each other scared if they did not throw the rock. This makes me feel sorry for Edward because of the vulnarability that he has gained and throught the vulnerability he can easily be manipulated. Also because of his vulnerability he could easily be pressured in to doing other ,more severe, actions in the future. As he grows and because during the 1960 heroin was a drug that was filling the streets in Liverpool, where the book is set, this gullableness that Edward possesses makes me sympathise with him more because of the control other people can gain of him using manipulation.

Lydia Dulley
