This book revolves around Gwen Frost, a 17 year old girl who is considered an outsider at Mythos Academy, a school of myths, magic and warrior kids. Students there are descendants of mythological warriors and are being trained to fight against the sinister God Loki and his supporters , so called reapers, and go as far as carrying weapons with them at school. They are all incredibly strong, except for Gwen. Her power is different than the other ones. Gwen has the gift of psychometry - the ability to know an object's or human's history, just by touching it can reveal many dark secrets and feelings. Even though this ability is more like a curse for Gwen, the Gypsy is soon ,after a murder occurring in school and the risk of Loki being set free, forced to use her abilities to save the day.

The book is about a girl named Hannah Baker, who commited suicide. Clay Jensen, who had a crush on her two weeks before she died, received a mysterious package. In the package were seven cassette tapes with thirteen stories. On the first tape, Hannah talks about that she holds each of theire listeners in some way responsible for her death. The other tapes are dedicated to one person on the list, which was in the package. The person who receives the tapes next, has to give them to the next person on the list. She said that if anybody fails to pass them along, a copy of the recordings will be made public. The realism of the game is fascinating Nick. 
The game gives him quests in reallive to upgrade his character.
He enjoys it until he finds out that the game has the intention to kill people and he helped.
Then he tries with a few friends to stop the game.
