Ronald Reagan appointed Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman associate justice of Supreme Court in 1981. She was known as one of the most powerful judges on the Court. She was a moderate conservative, like on abortion she didn’t rule against or for abortion, she was neutral.

The air traffic controller’s strike was one of the toughest situations relating to U.S. organized labor. In 1981, 13,000 workers laid off their jobs, and requesting there be safer working conditions, retirement benefits, and updated technology. Ronald Reagan responded to this strike by firing the strike controllers and replacing more than 10,000 workers. The union lost millions of dollars from being fined.

John Hinckley Jr. fired six shots. Struck Ronald Reagan in the left chest, James Brady in the left temple, Officer Thomas Delahanty in the neck, and Security Agent Timothy J. McCarthy in the stomach. Ronald Reagan was close to death. His life was saved by Secret Service agents and physicians many times. The bullet entered his left side, landing a few inches from the heart. John Hinckley was found not guilty by insanity.

In 1986 the immigration reform and control act was put into effect to stop illegal immigration into the United States. The act required employers to provide evidence of their employee’s immigration status and made it illegal to hire or recruit illegal immigrants knowingly. The act failed in stopping illegal immigration, but succeeded in granting millions of immigrants citizenship.

Explosion Space Shuttle Challenger

The space shuttle, challenger, exploded on January 18, 1986, 73 seconds after liftoff. Seven crew member deaths occurred from this explosion. The Challenger was the second craft added to NASA. The space shuttles were a cheaper alternative for the U.S. to explore space. NASA held off on other missions for two years, after the explosion happened.
