07/10/17
On Monday, I had a 1-hour talk with Ben, who is an English and studying physics. We made appointment in Goose at 9 pm. I prepared some popular but common topics before meeting him to avoid being embarrassed, such as movies and something concerning with politics. Through this preparation, I could remember words like aggressive character and conservative party. In the one hour, we chatted things from our own family to Brexit. He described his opinion about supporting Brexit patiently and honestly even though I did not think Brexit would benefit the Britain in a long-term. I attempted to lead him to talk more about sports cause I was fond of various sports activities. However, I failed. He is that kind of person who can be attracted by history. Meanwhile, I am such person who are willing to listen to things in history and enjoy the moment someone shares his attitude and knowledge. Therefore, it was a wonderful and impressive night.

speaking log 2: talking with estate agent

13/10/2017
Recently, I was dealing with a set of things concerning with the house my friends and I rent. I looked up plenty of words in dictionary before meeting the estate agent, such as ceiling , tenant , switch, short circuit and key cutting. Firstly, last week I told them that one part of the ceiling in the kitchen fell down, which led to the dirty dust on the floor. Meanwhile, I asked where the main switch was and described the situation that electricity was not available in the whole house due to the short circuit. Secondly, the original tenant couldn't come to England because of the failure on extending visa. I found a new tenant to replace her and had to resign the contract with the agent. We made an appointment with the agent, and I was told that the original tenant should pay extra 250 pounds for breaking the contract. This Friday, we found there were only 2 sets of keys for the common door. I tried to require more keys from the agent, however, they refused me and told me to find a key cutting store.

21/10/2017

I joined two meaningful events held by Chinese society this Friday and Saturday. I didn't prepare any words in advance because I thought I would not have the chance to speak English. However, I was definitely wrong. At the beginning, I was acquainted with many Malaysian Chinese and they used English to introduce themselves. After a short chatting we knew some basic information about each other. Then, I was allocated into another group in which an English included. We discussed about the punishment for the loser that was kissing a person of opposite sex. Another event holding on Saturday was making traditional Chinese food. At that moment I met a English guy I used to know and we chose to sit together, talking about methods to learn a language well. In a word, I spent a busy but wonderful weekends.

27/10/2017
At the beginning of this term I joined a society which is called Live at home Selly Oak. The manager welcomed me with enthusiasm and led me to a room where had 10 over 60-year -old women. One of them asked me whether I was a volunteer or not. I answered yes and told them if they needed any help I would be willing to help them. In the next one hour, we followed a guide to do some simple exercise and the lady near me told me she would go the Sainsbury's to do some shopping and asked me if I wanted to accompany her. I refused her politely and told her I had a lecture within 50 minutes. After doing exercise we had a nice talk with black tea. Those women like my grandmother who wanted to tell us things happened in the past. They told about recent news and great persons. I did not prepare well in advance so sometimes I would be a little confused about things they were talking about. This experience encourages me to read news and care more about history.

03/11/2017
This Friday, we were asked to give a group presentation about problems and recommendations of the BFC in front of all the classmates. To avoid being nervous I prepared well before delivering the presentation. After reviewing the materials about Birmingham furniture company, I analysed those problems and tried to find some accurate vocabulary. Although having prepared, I still felt a little strained while facing with my classmates. I attempted to have eye contact with them but it made me feel more embarrassed. What I need to improve is being more confident and fluent while expressing my idea. I can make best use of the handout which states strategies of presentation

08/11/2017
This Wednesday I had an appointment with the staff of action-tutoring , which is a charity organisation devoting itself to fair education . We met at a cafe in the morning. Before this meeting I read their leaflet and searched their website to know why it exists and what can I do as a volunteer. During the 2-hour talking, the lady showed me the current situation of action tutoring firstly and introduced matters needing attention while tutoring young person's math. We focused on safe guarding and child protection and she gave details of types of abuse such as physical abuse, emotional abuse and sexual abuse happening in children. Before leaving, she told me I needed to have an enhanced DBS check and promised that action tutoring can arrange to process one for me. Finally, I received a maths workbook and we said goodbye to each other.

Sorry about the wrong style of weekly log. I have changed it already.
speaking log 7: meet with my personal tutor

16/11/2017
This Thursday, I met with my personal tutor DR Ahmad in business school. Before that meeting, I tried my best to list problems I faced and organise myself well in stating them. I told him there were two main things troubled me most at present. The first one was lacking confidence while speaking English with native speakers. Another one was I couldn't make up my mind in the decision whether received the invitation of living with three English I met in a society or not next year. After listening to me carefully, he helped me to analyse both problems and gave me his suggestion. Initially, he led me to think the truth that to some degree I was able to speak two languages but for some of the native speakers they could only speak English. These words took me to the higher place while speaking English and definitely gave me confidence. As for the invitation, he encouraged me to accept it and thought it a good opportunity to improve my English. Thanks to my personal tutor, I could be more clear in the future.

25/01/2018
This Sunday I was invited to a birthday party of my Italian friend who I met in tennis society. I tried to organise myself well to state how I spent my Christmas holiday. I prepared words like vibrant and stunning to describe Edinburgh where I had been during holiday. There were some new and old friends. At the beginning we focused on delicious and delicate desserts and discussed which one was our favourite one. Then, we considered to have a dancing session to warm up. I persuaded my partner to choose an Indian song but it turned out to be in a mess for that session. 20 minutes later, I came up with another idea which was doing a fashion show by using current clothes. I was so glad they were enjoying that game and willing to show their most charming side. We evaluated each other's match on clothes and gave our specific scores. It was such a lovely day which I would keep in mind.

02/03/2018
This week we had a seminar in international macroeconomics. I printed the seminar material and read those questions conscientiously one day before that seminar. In class, we were required to discuss the fourth question as a group which was explaining three types of unemployment. Firstly, I pointed that frictional unemployment, structure unemployment and seasonal unemployment were three main types of unemployment. Other members of our group quite agreed with my opinion and asked me how to deal with frictional unemployment. I analysed that providing better job information through government job centres was the most important action according to our textbook. having discussed all these three types in a group, I was asked to answer that question in front of others. However, the teacher pointed that cyclical unemployment should be included rather than seasonal unemployment and told me cyclical unemployment occurred during recession and depression. It was of great significance to discuss those economic terminologies in the seminar.
