The good side of working from home for us is the incentive to be finished so that it is play time! Oliver is an early bird, so he's up and ready to work by 6:30 or 7:00. He is motivated early in the day to knock out his work.
The tough side in our home is that attention spans are very short on Zoom. Shortened, condensed sessions work much better, in our experience.

What works for James is keeping it simple, because he really dislikes remote learning. He doesn’t excel if he has to go to multiple websites to complete his school work.

Would agree with the Oester’s on the positives and negatives of virtual learning. For sure the biggest challenge is the attention span on the zoom classes...and the fact they all just miss their friends and the interaction of being IN the classroom.

The fourth grade teachers have done a great job assigning a reasonable workload with enough instruction and interaction. Catherine doesn’t mind a zoom call because it’s a time to see her teachers and friends but we agree they can sometimes be too long and interrupt momentum when they’re schedule in the middle of the morning. The flip grid has been a great way for the kids to communicate on their own time either with a written response to a teacher’s question or short video of themself. I think a choice board is great for AIG and she’ll enjoy the opportunity to work on a project with a friend.

It was hard for Kalina studied all the time by herself at home before summer vacation. She is sad she has to do it again after summer vacation. I really appreciate her understanding when I explained to her what we are still facing to. But this year at least she will meet her teachers on zoom and her classmates as well more often. I hope this special time teaches her how to get over rainy days.

Academically, Gavin really does well when he is able to initiate and complete work independently without distractions, so in that sense, some aspects of remote learning are working. However, socially and emotionally, he is really struggling. He thrives on human connection and is missing the peer contact/in-person instruction tremendously. He's definitely more motivated with the Zoom contacts (vs last spring), but it can be tiresome with so many in a day's time. I know adults get Zoom-fatigue—I can only imagine what it's like for our kids! I would also like to echo the overload of assessments on Fridays. To have everything all at once is (and has historically been) very overwhelming.

Remote learning has been going much smoother this Fall compared to last Spring and I attribute that to the fact that the 4th grade teachers have made the workload manageable. That said, Brody is much more focused in-person with live instruction vs. video recordings or zoom. He can easily do the work, but the motivation factor is not there. One thing that has helped us is receiving responses from teachers as he's motivated by the feedback (and it keeps him accountable). Last Spring there were many times he didn't receive feedback in response to his completed assignments and that was disappointing. Brody loves projects, as well as the ability to choose what to work on, so the idea of a choice board is fantastic. Fewer, shorter zoom calls would be helpful, so 1 AIG zoom call per week would be ideal.
