Due by Wed., May 1=question 1
1. Use chp 3, pg 29, read 1st full paragraph and answer--What does this detail (making announcements to point out mistakes) suggest about the role of the announcements in Jonas’s community? Be specific and support your answer.
YOUR ANSWER-- The role of making announcements to point out mistakes in the Community is to make the people in the Community feel pressured to be perfect because the Community is an Utopia. (Author's viewpoint=publicly shame people so they obey the rules)
2. Jonas’s community is highly regulated with rules. Read the sections about the rule against bragging (34). Answer and support-- What is the rule’s purpose in the community? Why does it exist? What impact does the rule have on the community?
YOUR ANSWER-- Since the Community is an Utopia the rule against bragging is trying to make everyone equal and the same. The impact of that rule on the Community is that no one in the Community is trying to show off or boast about their accomplishments.
3. Which narrative point of view (POV) is used in The Giver? Use pg 53 to support your answer with text evidence with the sentence from the novel that proves the POV you chose.
YOUR ANSWER-- 3rd person limited because on page 53 the author writes ¨Jonas was certainly glad that that Assignment was taken...¨

QUESTION #4--DUE WEDNESDAY, MAY 8.
Use p. 82: How does Jonas feel upon leaving the auditorium? Which words make you think that? (support your answer)
YOUR ANSWER-- Jonas felt different, separate from others, and apartness after he left the auditorium. I know that because the narrator on page 65 says ¨Now, for the first time in his twelve years of life, Jonas felt separate, different.¨ and ¨...he felt the apartness.¨
QUESTION #5
How has Jonas’s attitude shifted slightly in chapter twelve? Make sure to explain your answer using details from the text. Use chapter 12. HINT-Keep this in mind as you think about a new symbol to symbolize Jonas in the Middle of the Novel.

YOUR ANSWER--Jonas´ attitude shifted from being shy, nervous, and worried to more confident, less shy, braver and because of that he is more eager to his training as the narrator mentions on page 90 ¨´I really think I´ll like it better than school,´ Fiona confessed. ´Me too,´ Jonas agreed,...¨
A. Define a protagonist & give an example from the video or from a story you know.
YOUR ANSWER-- protagonist=central character in a story or a character that goes through a change
The Wizard of Oz
protagonist=Dorothy

B. Define an antagonist & give an example from the video or from a story you know.
YOUR ANSWER-- antagonist=the opposing force or character who leads the conflict against the protagonist or the force or person that makes the protagonist change or go through a change
The Wizard of Oz
antagonist=the Wicked Witch of the West

C. In The Giver, who is the protagonist and antagonist? Support your answer. Be sure to go over terms and explain pro & ant are not always people.
YOUR ANSWER-- Jonas is the protagonist because he is the central character in The Giver and he is going through changes as the narrator says on pg 125 "'I just didn't realize there was any other way, until I received that memory."' This quote shows that Jonas starts to discover new things.
The antagonist is the way the Community functions, and the rules of the Community because as Jonas gains wisdom, he starts to see the Community as a empty and feeling less place (unfair) as the narrator says on pg 126(158) ¨'And that I wish we could be that way, and that you could be my grandparent. The family in the memory seemed a little more...'
... 'A little more complete,"'

Memory
Jonas found himself in a very quiet and still room. The room was not very fancy, yet he noticed the way the chairs and tables were set. Each table had six chairs (three on each side) and three sets of white and green squared boards with black and white figures set in a uniform order. Then, he noticed a small group of people gathered around one of the tables. Jonas came closer to see what the group was doing. When he approached the crowd, he saw two people, both females, sitting on opposite ends of a board moving the figures on the board. Jonas perceived the word "chessboard" for the green and white square board and "chess pieces" for the black and white figures. Jonas liked the silence. It was calming and relaxing. Suddenly the girl playing with black chess pieces said "Checkmate!"
Both shook hands and said "Good game!"
The crowd split up and Jonas now got a closer view of the board. Black's pieces all cooperating together formed a beautiful mate.
"Wow!"
In an instant, Jonas found himself on the bed in the Annex room.
"What a memory!" he exclaimed.
Explanation of why I chose this memory
I chose this memory because the memory(especially the sentence "Jonas now got a closer view of the board. Black's pieces all cooperating together formed a beautiful mate.") shows an example of how by cooperating together, you can accomplish something, reach your goals or solve your problems and by this, Jonas might be able to solve his problems.

The resolution in The Giver(which is how the problem(s) in a book are solved) is that Jonas along with Gabriel escapes from the Community and at the very end Jonas and Gabriel are sliding down on a hill either toward a house and a family celebrating Christmas or freezing to death and arriving at heaven as the narrator states on pages 178-179 "Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and that they were waiting too, for the baby. For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing. Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo."
The first four sentences support the first ending while the last sentence suggests that Jonas is freezing to death and arriving at heaven and seeing and hearing those things or is just hallucinating.
