Martin Luther challenged the Church’s authority and her ability to define christian practice. There were various reasons which led to the cause of the Reformation. The church sold tickets of indulgence ( a release from all sins by the Catholic Church, reducing time in purgatory after death), clergy abuse caused people to begin criticizing the Church. The greed and scandalous lives of the clergy had created a split between them and the peasants.

The swiss reform began in 1519 with the teachings of Ulrich Zwingli, whose teachings largely paralleled Luther’s. In 1541 John Calvin who wrote “Institutes of the Christian Religion,” was invited to settle in geneva and put his reformed doctrine- which stressed God’s power and humanity’s predestined faith, to practice. Calvin’s geneva became the breeding ground for protestant exiles and his doctrine quickly spread to other countries

He was able to gain a good number of followers, especially peasants since the greedy lives of the clergy had created a ridge between them.
