Kaiser: 6. What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

The theme of the poem is the expansion of rights for women. The poem describes a woman, possibly Emily herself, being treated like royalty with people kneeling down to her while she rides in a chariot with gates being closed behind her. The poem concludes by saying the valves of her attention are closing, bringing the reader back to reality. Overall, the poem is talking about imagining a society that is controlled by Emily herself, where she is royalty and known by all, where she is able to keep people out and let people in if she chooses.

Jose: Question 1: What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic?

The poem's tone I believe is serious and bit rebellious in a way. Like almost being your own person and being in charge of your own life. Words that help reveal that tone is the actual title of the poem, "The soul selects her own society." It gives a sense of she is in charge of her own life. I think it's ironic for her because of her sexuality that in a time back then where it was not allowed, but in this poem she is kind of giving a sense of she decided who she is what her life wants to be.

Jose: Question 4: What figures of speech are used? How do they contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem?

Figures of speech that are used in this poem would be personification and possibly alliteration. The title in its self is actually both. "The Soul selects her own Society" is personification as its saying a soul which is not exactly something living is getting to chose the life it wants to live. I think she adds this in the poem to show how its her own feelings and emotions that get to choose what her life should be. The words like soul and society in the sentence make up the alliteration. With that being also the first line I think it draws in the readers to what the poem is about.

Kaiser: 5. Are there any symbols? What do they mean? Are they universal symbols or do they arise from the context of this poem?

There are numerous symbols in the poem including chariots, kneeling emperors, and royal gates. These are universal themes that are in relation to royalty and respect. This goes with the story of the poem where she describes a women being treated like royalty.
