For this elective posting, I have chosen to learn mandarin via online on Coursera. For the first week, I managed to learn how to greet people, ask someone’s name, pronounce words correctly by using spelling rules of Pinyin, ask their nationality and introduce family members in mandarin.

3. Points to remember from Week 1
The points to remember are the pinyin rules which consists of an initial, final and tone. There are 4 tones in Chinese. The first tone is flat and high. Second tone is a rising tone. Thirdly, starting from neutral to lower pitch before ending at a higher pitch. Fourth tone is a falling tone.

4. Your feelings and thoughts
I am thrilled to learn new language as I can apply this in my daily life.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
The only difficult part for me was, I had difficulty to enunciate the word by using different tones. I really have to improve this. This is because in Mandarin, enunciation is the crucial part because different enunciation leads to different meaning. For example, “wen” means ask but also kiss. Aside from referring to materials given, i can always practice with my younger sister since she has learned Mandarin in school.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
Thrilled and excited

7.

1. Name: Nur Arina Amira Binti Harizal
Matrix number: A173739
Date: 24/7/2022

2. What have you done?
I have enrolled in a Learning Korean language online in Coursera website and it was taught by a Korean professor named Prof. Seung Hee Kang. For the first week, I have been watching a total of 4 hours videos that introduce me to the Hangul alphabets and other derived vowels and consonants from those basic alphabets. I have learned on how to properly pronounce the alphabets and syllables in Hangul. Besides, the professor also provides reading materials after each lessons which basically to recap what has been learnt. After each lessons, there are also quizzes that I had done in which I have to score at least an 80% in order to move on to the next phase.

3. Points to remember from week 1.
I have to at least remember all the basic vowels and consonants first in order to really master this Hangul language. There are 10 basic vowels and 14 basic consonants. The derivation of vowels and consonants from those basic alphabets could be confusing at times but I think over times I can make it through. Another thing is, I need to pronounce or hear the the words carefully because some syllables might sound the same.

4. Your feelings and thought.
I feel very excited especially because now I am able to read Hangul! I have always love watching Korean dramas and hear to their music since 11, but unable to read them yet. Now I am able to fully read Korean sentences in just a week, of course without understanding them yet but I am sure that I will do so, soon.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
Basically, the whole process of learning new language is difficult as I was been introduced to new alphabets. Even the sound of some Hangul alphabets is hard to pronounce. While answering the quizzes, I have realized that even though now I can read Hangul, but hearing to Hangul is quite difficult because sometimes the pronunciation sounds the same, but the meaning of the words are different. I even scored 70% on one of the quiz because of this pronunciation difficulty, so what I did is I tried to pronounce the words by myself first and then hear to the questions back many times, and then only I was able to answer it correctly.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting so far.
Fun and excellent

7. Your plan for next week.
Learn on how to greet people in line with the course objectives for week 2. As in this week, it will consists of videos, reading materials and quizzes after each lessons.

1. Name: Irliana binti Ibrahim
Matrix Number: A173835
Date: 24/7/2022

2. As an opportunity to improve myself in Korean Language, the first week of the course "A Bridge to the World: Korean Language for Intermediate 1" provided me some insights on how to greet and introduce myself and other people. This week's classes also taught me on ways to talk about travel.

3. From week 1, I will have to remember the basic grammar of adding different syllables to words that either ends with or without consonant. "Verb(이)라고 하다" and "Noun-고 있다" are simple but [ast form "았/었" cannot be combined with "-고" in the front, which is very important as non-fluent speakers tend to interchange the grammar.
When it is "verb-거나", consonant does not matter.

4. From the very beginning I was excited to learn proper grammars of the Korean Language as I have always spoken in Korean informally. This week, I sat down through 2 classes back-to-back. I find it somewhat tiresome as I was starting to lose focus halfway through the second class. Nonetheless, I managed to complete both of them.

5. It turns out, repeating the sentences/scenarios after the professors are really helpful to familiarize myself more with the accents as my Malay tongue tends to get twisted when speaking Korean. I got confused with some exercises but that's nothing a revision can't fix.

6. To describe my elective posting so far, it would be "curiosity fed".

7. My plan for next week is I would like to do 1 class a day instead of going back to back like I did for this week.

There are 4 chapters per weeks. In week 1, I learned about the Korean alphabet which consists of vowels and consonants. After going through every chapter, there is a graded quiz to evaluate my progression to make sure I can move on to the next chapter. What have you done?
I had enrolled in a physical guitar learning course where I will be learning the basics of the classical guitar for beginners. On the first week I had the opportunity to learn about the guitar itself where I was given the insight on the parts of the guitar and how it works. I also learned about the hand placements on the guitar and the posture that has to maintained while playing the guitar. I also learned about the strings and the frets of the guitar.

3. Points to remember from Week 1?

From the first week which was also my first ever introduction to guitar, I had to remember quite a lot of stuffs about it. First of all, I had to remember about the parts of the guitar. I also have to remember the on how many “usable” fingers the left hand consists of while on the right hand I have to remember the difference between picking and strumming. I also have to remember few of the basic chords in the time i had.

4. Your feelings and thoughts.
Well I was feeling a little overwhelmed from the first lesson since I had zero experience with a guitar before. Thus, even the easiest thing felt a little hard for me. However, I am excited to practice my skills and also improving them by learning new chords.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
Like I mentioned before, my lack of experience with guitar made me struggle with the hand placement in the beginning. I also struggled to maintain a proper posture. However, my instructor was kind enough to guide me slowly until I was able to catch up on it. I also started practising on everything I had learned so far so that I’ll be able to improve my skills.

6. 2 words to describe your elective posting so far?
Overwhelming and exciting.

7. What have you done ?
I applied a part time job as service crew at Lucky Lucky Foodstore through an application called Troopers. It is a new fancy halal food court located at the ground floor of a hotel and it sells a lot of Chinese foods. For week 1, as a new member of the service crew, I was assigned to clear the tables and sanitize it after the customers leaves. I found the task was very easy for me.

3. Points to remember from week 1
I learned that in the food and beverage industry, efficiency and quality are very important. I need to make sure that the tables are cleaned as soon as the customers leaves to make sure other customers can dine in there usually during lunch and dinner time because that is when the foodstore is packed with customers. After clearing the tables, i will usually sort out the plates accordingly on the trolley so that it will be easier for the stewards.

4. Your feelings and thoughts
I was nervous on the first day of working as I did not know to whom should I introduce myself as the supervisor in charge on Troopers apps is not there.

1.
Name: PUVANASRI A/P G. JAYA SHANKAR
Matric no: A174107
Date: 24 July 2022

2. What have you done?

I chose baking to be my Elective Posting (EP) due to several reasons. First and foremost, I am a person who hates to enter the kitchen. Besides, I never had interest in cooking, baking is far from my reach. However, I want to challenge myself by taking up this course for my EP because after all these days, cooking is essential and baking is a reward. So WHY NOT! Therefore, I attended an online baking course on ude.my titled "The art of baking with Yuppie chef" where I learned a lots of baking skills and the crisp art of bakery. The tips provided are really useful and resourceful. Thus, I decided to bake marble cake which turned out quite well surprisingly.

3. Points to remember from week 1!

The first step in baking is to make sure you go through the recipe, ingredients and steps from start to the end. Measure each of the ingredients precisely, not more and not less. I realized when the measurement is not correct, the cake will become a disaster. These marble cakes are my second trial that succeed after terrible first start. Therefore, measurement is always an important thing. Suitable temperature and right size of the tray is also important for baking a delicious cake.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

Baking is not really my thing but I really want to learn and master it because I will gain a lot of things as newcomer. I will try my best to be patient when something goes wrong during the baking process. Learning is a part of life and so is baking. Thus, I hope to enjoy and have fun while baking cakes and cookies.

5. Any difficulties/concerns?
