The war was fought between the colonists in Texas and the Mexicans. The Texas War of Independence was also called the Texas Revolution. Antonio López de Santa Anna and President Anastasio Bustamante were also involved in the Texas Revolution. Antonio López de Santa Anna was a Mexican General who fought in the Texas Revolution. Anastasio Bustamante was the president of Mexico at the time. Meanwhile, in the United States, Andrew Jackson was the president at the time. Jim Bowie, William Travis, and Davy Crockett were important American figures during the Texas Revolution. Martin Van Buren, James Polk, and Andrew Jackson were all involved in this also. In 1821, Texas was still part of Mexico, so the US didn't own Texas. Many American settlers and Tejanos wanted to break away from Mexico, because they didn't like the laws that were made by Santa Anna, Mexico's president. (Tejanos are Mexicans who lived in Texas) The Tejanos and Texans decided to fight for independence. In 1836, Santa Anna took an army to San Antonio. They took a fort there called the Alamo. Most of the Texans and Tejanos died in battle. (The Battle of the Alamo was the first battle in the Texas Revolution) Texas gained independence and then they formed the Republic of Texas. Sam Houston led the army in a surprise attack at San Jacinto. They won and captured Santa Anna. If Santa Anna wanted to be free, he would have to give Texas its independence. And that's exactly what he did! Now Texas was free from Mexico. President Martin Van Buren was against the idea of annexation. (annexation is when you join two countries or pieces of land together) Mexico wanted to keep Texas, and Van Buren thought that would cause war. He also didn't want to add a new state to the union that allowed slavery. People who wanted to annex Texas said it was the manifest destiny of the United States to spread from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. In 1845, James Polk became President. Congress voted to annex Texas. The US and Mexico disagreed on the border between Texas and Mexico. The US Congress declared war on Mexico in 1846. Soldiers fought on 3 different fronts. (Fronts are where the fighting takes place in the war) The Americans captured Mexico City. (1847) In 1848, Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In the treaty, Mexico agreed to annexing Texas and the Rio Grande as the border between Texas and Mexico. Mexico also gave a large piece of land to the United States.

● Cultural differences between the Mexicans and the Americans.
● Americans didn't want to speak Spanish.
● Americans didn't want to accept the Roman Catholic.
● They had different judicial systems. Mexican system was 'guilty until proved innocent' as opposed to American system of 'innocent until proved guilty'
● The Mexicans opposed slavery, whereas many Americans had been raised in the slave states of the south.
● Role of the Mexican military to collect taxes
● The government of Mexico: ruled by 1 person. The Americans, however, did it this way: Most of the more important decisions were made by state officials rather than elected by elected representatives.
● Changes in the government to a less democratic system.
● The Mexican constitution based on in favor of states’ rights, as opposed to federal control was overturned.
● The Americans retained trading links with the U.S. 
● Many Americans believed that Texas, and other parts of Mexico, should belong to the U.S.

Even though it wasn't exactly expanding to the west, it expanded South. (Border of Mexico and Texas) The bottom part of Texas, which dips into the side of Mexico was once not part of Mexico. Texas is a pretty big state, though. Although we didn't exactly go westward with this one, it still expanded!
