Awabakal Preschool strives to provide a culturally appropriate and supportive learning environment where children have the opportunity to explore and experience new things.

Preschool is a fun place to be for children and our dedicated staff ensure relationships are established with all children and families from the start. We believe that genuine, caring relationships are the key to nurturing young children's positive self-esteem and identity.

Following changes to Government funding arrangements in 2016, Awabakal made the decision to transition the existing child care service in Wickham to a preschool. We also have the well-established preschool located in Glendale.

Awabakal’s Preschools offer a quality, culturally appropriate preschool service. Our preschool focuses on providing children and families with an excellent early childhood education.

We focus on developing literacy and numeracy skills through play-based activities, with an emphasis on school readiness. Our preschool provides a thorough transition to school program with visits to local schools in Term Four.

KU’s Education Support Team supports KU centres with the inclusion of children with additional needs. This may include children with diagnosed disabilities, challenging behaviour or social and emotional difficulties, as well as supporting families and educators when they have concerns about a child’s development. The team of Education Support Managers have qualifications in Early Childhood Education and Teaching as well as Post Graduate qualifications in Special Education or related fields

At KU Ourimbah, we search to understand the children’s fascinations that they bring with them every day and in so doing, promote each child’s sense of belonging. Children's family life is respected; the recognition of home cultures underpins our approach. 

Our daily routine guides the progress of the day. Routines are developed to give consistency alongside flexibility, so we can accommodate emergent learning from many spontaneous opportunities that arise. The routine has periods of quiet and energetic times, group and individual experiences, child initiated and adult directed activities. Routines are recognised as important opportunities for learning. We are responsive to the individual needs of our children and our group times include music, story and drama, science, mathematics, geography, history, technology and physical activity.

Our education and care service is privately owned and operated by Melissa Duffy-Fagan who is also our Director and Educational Leader.  Melissa is supported daily by a magnificent team of 14 teachers, over 100 children and families and the wider community of educators in the Newcastle region. It takes this marvellous village to operate a successful educational facility.
