- In front of the Radley lot, Scout and Jem find little "gifts" wrapped in tinfoil inside the knot-hole of a tree.
- The gifts received were chewing gum, grey twine, girl and boy dolls carved out of soap, a spelling medal, a pocket-watch, and pennies of Indian heads in a velvet package.
- Jem tells Scout he's going to tell on her if she doesn't spit the gum out because he thinks everything from the Radley house is poison.
- School ends, summer begins, and Dill comes back to Maycomb.
- Dill and Jem rolled Scout in a tire and she landed on the Radley steps.
- The kids got the idea to play a new game called "Boo Radley".

This quote is significant because Jem is treating Scout like a little girl because she's afraid of the Radley house and she doesn't want to play the Boo Radley game. This quote is significant because Boo Radley doesn't come outside so he doesn't like attention, he uses the kids for entertainment, he watches them play their games and have fun. Scout's relationship with Calpurnia is on bad terms in the beginning of the novel, Scout doesn't agree with the fact that Atticus hired a colored women to work for them. Their relationship gets stronger for the better around the time of the trial when she finally understands why her dad does what he does, because it is right and fair. Scout is getting bored with school and feels like she's missing out on everything because she wasn't homeschooled like her dad. Meanwhile, Dill returns to Maycomb feeling grown up because he traveled back by himself, however Jem becomes angry with Scout because he thinks she is acting like too much of a girl. This chapter is needed in the novel because it arises the suspense of Boo Radley. The kids continuously received little "gifts" from Boo Radley that made him seem more mysterious.
