Hi everyone! My name is Jaclyn Siegel and I'm happy to be part of this media literacy learning cohort :)

I have a few media literacy motivations! First, as a (history) educator and now administrator, I am motivated to provide a space for my students to develop & strengthen their media literacy skills. I also present on the importance of media literacy and ML education to international journalists and those who engage with the Department of State's International Visitors Leadership Program. As an advocate, I work as a representative from Media Literacy Now to promote ML education legislation in NYS (6 years and counting).

Based on the Media Literacy Motivations quiz: I am first and foremost an activist (not surprising), followed by a Techie and a Demystifier.

I am a high school teacher, working with teenagers from 12 to 18 years old. I keep trying to bring the English language closer to my students everyday, not only through language teaching but also through music, history, movies, etc.

On the Motivations Horoscope I am an activist. My research & teaching have been grounded in social justice issues. I have also been fortunate to learn with/from 3 youth YouTubers who identify as media activists. My background is in literacies & my current preoccupation is eco-literacies.
Critical AI literacy has become important for all educators. So, even though I am not very interested in it, during the Institute I plan to design an introductory module for the Teacher Candidates I work with in my Grades 1-8 Language Arts courses, and for my grad course on integrating technologies across the curriculum. As an "East" I have been known to get bogged down in "big picture" thinking!

I am very new to media literacy. I took a certificate in the subject during the 2022-2023 semesters. My interest is giving adults tools to decode the news. I have created a PowerPoint for the purpose of doing workshops. The field seems geared to k - 12 and college. Adults that are already out in the world or retired have nothing geared to them. I am interested in learning more about all aspects of media literacy, whether I am able to implement them or not. This experience will broaden me out as a person. For my micro credential, I signed up for Teaching the Conspiracies. I lean toward infographics, but I think I would benefit from the Conspiracies at this point. Hard decision for me.

I'm Lindsey Sherrill. I'm an assistant professor of business communication at the University of North Alabama, and a big part of my teaching is information and media literacy. I'm in the College of Business, so for many of my students, my class is the only college-level dive into finding and using credible media that they get.
I'm a Activist, Watchdog, and Professional. That makes a ton of sense to me--I'm a former journalist, a writing professor, and my research tends toward media sociology and media effects. I wrote my dissertation on the intersection of true crime media and the criminal justice reform movement. My motivation for teaching are strongly tied to my passion for understanding the origins and motivations of the messages we receive every day, and teaching students how to parse those issues for themselves.
