The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead presents several struggles that reflect real-life historical and modern issues, particularly regarding race, oppression, and systemic injustice.

1. Slavery and Its Brutality → Historical Reality of American Slavery

Enslaved people on the Randall plantation experience physical abuse, dehumanization, and forced labor, reflecting the real horrors of slavery in the U.S.

2. The Illusion of Freedom → Systemic Racism in the U.S.

In South Carolina, Cora believes she has found freedom, but the government is secretly performing medical experiments on Black people, similar to the real-life Tuskegee Syphilis Study (1932-1972) where Black men were unknowingly used for medical research.

3. The Threat of White Supremacy → Racial Violence & Oppression

Ridgeway, the relentless slave catcher, represents white supremacy’s persistence—a system that refuses to let Black people escape or succeed.

The massacre at Valentine Farm, a prosperous Black community, mirrors real-life events like the Tulsa Race Massacre (1921), where white mobs destroyed a thriving Black neighborhood. Black progress is always seen as a threat reflects modern racial discrimination in education, housing, and employment.

4. Fear and Betrayal → The Risks of Resistance

Even those who help enslaved people, like Martin and Ethel, face violent consequences. This reflects the real-life danger abolitionists and Underground Railroad conductors faced, as helping fugitives was illegal.

The idea that even "good" white people fear consequences more than they value justice reflects how silence and complicity enable oppression.

5. Escaping One System of Oppression to Enter Another → Institutional Racism

Cora constantly moves from place to place, yet true freedom remains elusive—a reflection of how Black Americans, even after Emancipation, faced segregation, Jim Crow laws, and ongoing discrimination.

The ending, where Cora is still on the move, mirrors the real-life struggles of Black Americans who continue to fight for equality today.

Whitehead’s novel is more than historical fiction—it’s a commentary on how racial oppression evolves rather than disappears. The struggles Cora faces reflect both past and present racial injustices, making the novel deeply relevant to today’s world.

Cora’s journey in The Underground Railroad shows that the fight for freedom doesn’t end just because the laws change. Even after escaping slavery, she faces new forms of oppression at every turn—just like how racism has continued to evolve in real life. The novel forces us to ask: If Cora were alive today, would she truly be free?
