I have created this padlet to share my opinion on the death penalty with all of you'll. I would really appreciate it if you could comment on this because this is a topic that I actually take very seriously. Please be respectful of each and everyone's views. To many people it may seem harsh but I believe that the death penalty should be reinforced,but only for really serious crimes such as murder or sexual assault . Ask yourself are these criminals really getting punished for their deeds?At the moment criminals are being given approximately 25 years in jail for murdering someone, of which they only do 10 years and are released early on good behaviour. A month or two later they kill again. How can we say that death is to harsh of a punishment for someone or hurt and killed a toddler? Everytime someone gets murdered we hold a beautiful march and we get upset but two weeks later all is forgotten. I am sorry but that's just not enough for me. On the one hand, there are arguments that we will be just as guilty as the murderer because we are committing the exact same crime as that person did. But on the other hand, that person should be punished and we all know that SA's justice system is failing us. People get arrested today and released a few days later. In my area, we constantly witnessing crime and murders but nothing is being done to effectively protect or put an end to that. South Africa has a high number of murder and rape cases and a stronger sentence could be the answer we are looking for. Letting perpetrators out because of good behaviour seems like a slap to the face of survivors who re-live their trauma constantly or even internalise it and become mentally unstable. Bringing back the death penalty is also one of the few ways to guarantee that a crime does not happen again. We do however need to make sure we get the right people to implement and investigate the death penalty trials as killing the wrong people would just be hurting the already fragile state of this broken nation.

The thing is that back then in times of apartheid regime it was used on innocent people. We have children being kidnapped and found dead in bushes and mountains, we have taxi drivers and owners from different associations gunning down each other and there's many more painful crimes that are committed and yet those criminals are put to jail and later come out. Corruption is taking place all over our areas, we have corrupt cops and lawyer that are easily bribed by the criminals for them to be out of prison, how then do we expect crime to end. The death penalty truly is the definition of a win-lose situation, as Maybe an innocent person will die , but then again no one knows that they are innocent right? The evidence against them proves them guilty, so who are we too judge when they sentence has been given based on the evidence. I think that with the death penalty being removed, it gave criminals freedom, they are litterally living in luxury. They get food, entertainment, and even the most horrible criminals have a chance to go home because of "Good Behaviour", and while that can be true that they "changed" one can never really know for how long or if it was just a front to get out.

I think that death is too easy of a punishment, it ends suffering, and brings peace to the person because they feel nothing. True punishment comes from living, and having regret, ofcourse some people are psychopaths and do not have the mental capacity to feel any remoarse for what they have done. Their is a whole contradicting effect that the Death Penalty leaves on ones mind. Due to the large number of murder and rape cases in South Africa, a harsher penalty may be the answer. Allowing abusers to leave because of good behavior appears to be a slap in the face to survivors who are continually reliving their trauma or have internalized it to the point of becoming mentally ill. Reintroducing the death sentence is also one of the few ways to ensure that a crime will not be repeated.
