Most of Hawthorne's first stories were published anonymously, but that all changed when he released "Twice Told-Tales" and a whole other slue of stories. In 1842 he married his wife Sophia and they moved to Old Manse in Concord, Massachusetts, where Hawthorne was in contact with many philosophical thinkers such as Henry David Thoreau. Hawthorne died on May 19, 1864 from an unknown cause because of his rejection of a medical examination. He had left for the New Hampshire hills with Franklin Pierce hoping that it would help him regain his health. But he died the second night they were gone in Plymouth.

Attraction can also be see as one of the main themes of this story. Hester and Dimmesdale love each other but have obstacles in the story holding them back and disallowing them to love each other, obstacles such as chillingworth, for example. Hester doesn't only show Attraction for Dimmesdale, she shows a lot of love towards her daughter as well. Dimmesdale and heather named their daughter Pearl to show how much love they have for her, essentially naming her after a treasure.

Born July 4, 1804, In Salem Massachusetts. As the only male child Hawthorne was born into a family where his father was a sea captain who died of yellow fever. After his father's demise his family was left with little financial support. At a early age Hawthorne suffered from a leg injury, that left him immobile however, it gave him the opportunity to fall in love with reading and literature. He soon set his sights on being a writer. WIth the help of his wheathy uncles he ended up going to college where he met his best friend, Henry Longfellow as well as future president, Franklin Pierce. Hawthorne in school was very negligent and little little ambition to study. In school Hawthorne refused to participate in public speaking and even one time was fined ¢50 for gambling cards.

Sin (Theme)

In the story "The Scarlet Letter" there seems to be a strong presence of the theme of sin. Throughout the whole story we see people being punished for their sins, whether is be society mocking them or their own mind, the characters that have sinned fell repercussion for their actions. For example the birth of pearl is a result of adultery. Because of this the A appears in Heathers chest and and she is shamed for it as everyone believes the A stands for "adultery'. And not only this, but pear may as well be the spawn of satan. Both theses depictions support the idea that sin, and your punishments for them are a major theme in this story. Specifically the fact Heather has sinned.

The Scarlet Letter (Symbols)

You really cannot mention symbols in the scarlet letter and not bring up the scarlet letter itself. The Scarlet letter very obviously symbolizes sin (or at least in the point in the book i'm at it does). Not only does heather wear the scarlet letter on her chest as a kind of 'eternal burden' but she also has it on her sewed onto her shirts to show the sin she has committed (A stands for adultery). Everyone knows she has sinned and the scarlet letter takes us down a theme almost about the path to redeem oneself for their sins.

The meteor seen by dimmesdale, hester, and pearl is also a symbol in the story. This is because it was said to be a sign from god. It is also a symbol that shows the governor is a angel . It shows dimmesdale that he also must wear the A that stands for adultery. Yet again this is another symbol that shows us the sins of our characters.

Religion (Life in the Puritan 17th Century)

The puritan movement started in the 16th century as a way to "purify" the church of england. The puritans were a extreme group that believed that God had made a deal with them. They believed that God expected them to live off of the scriptures, and that they had to live in a way that made all the people part of the regular church of England realize thier sins. As a result sinners within the puritain religion itself were not treated well at all. sinners were banished from thier towns, publicly humiliated, and even sometimes executed for thier actions. Quit litterally the puritain belived they were doing the work of God. This left absolutly no room for error
