Personal Philosophy Statement

My personal philosophy in the practice of a Developmental Services Worker (DSW) can be characterized as a shift towards a more person-centered model of support that is not based on a clinical model. Working as a Registered Nurse in Nepal, my first training was based on the medical approach of care, and the most common outcome was to treat symptoms and stabilize the patient physically. But as I undertook my course at Fanshawe College and during my placement in John Paul II Catholic Secondary School, I have changed my view. I have now realized that health and safety are central but the most important thing about DSW work is empowerment and encouraging a self directed life. In my opinion, all people, whether they have developmental issues or not, have their own strengths and the right to live with dignity, choice, and social inclusion. There are two overriding principles that inform this belief system. The former is Person-Directed Care. My day-to-day experience of my school placement teaches me the importance of students being able to have a sense of control over their surroundings. I use this principle by employing the adaptive technology, including customized iPad schedules, in assisting the students in their transition through self-help. Giving the student the opportunity to create his/her own day is not only a schedule I am managing but also a way of respecting his/her autonomy. In my opinion, we affirm an individual by listening to their likes and dislikes, even when they are not spoken. The second principle that I am guided by is Inclusion and Advocacy. My nursing experience taught me to promote the medical needs of a patient, whereas being a DSW, I promote the right of the person to belong. This implies that at John Paul II, efforts should be made to make sure that students are not idle but rather active members of the school community. In my opinion, inclusion is not something that we are willing to do to people with disabilities, but a human right. It is my job to serve as an intermediary, eliminating obstacles, physical, social, or attitudinal, that make people not experience the world around them to the fullest. These values are backed up by the fact that I adhere to the fundamental competencies, namely Strategic Thinking and Collaboration. Strategic thinking in the classroom enables me to note environmental stimuli that may trigger pain to a student like sensory overstimulation. I am able to support the emotional regulation and the success of the student by actively manipulating the environment. Moreover, I appreciate teamwork and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team of mentor teachers and educational assistants. My nursing experience has also taught me that the most effective results can be achieved when a team has a shared vision of support. Finally, my philosophy is influenced by the positive principles of patience, empathy, and Dignity of Risk. I understand that an individual needs to be free to experiment and sometimes not succeed to become a better person. Using the DSW values of independence and empowerment and balancing my clinical knowledge of safety, I aim to assist a person, not merely care about him/her, but to be concerned about his/her future and right to dream.
