How? It's because the United States and Britain negotiated an agreement. The Treaty of Paris, made by the Continental Congress, included the following six conditions:
  1. America is now an independent country.
  2. They have boundaries along the Mississippi River on the west, Canada on the north, and the Spanish Florida in the south.
  3. The right to fish off of the coast of Canada.
  4. America and Britain are to repay their debts of 27 million to each country. 
  5. Free all or any prisoners taken hostage from war.
  6. Loyalists to return any property seized from war.
Suffering from the great loss of the war, the Patriots lost 25,700 American soldiers and more were wounded with permanent fatal wounds.
