Case Study (not animal related): 1,000 pubs closing all over England and Wales due to crippling costs. There has been a fall of 1,530 pubs that are liable for business rates since 2017. This is due to political instability (Brexit) leading to increased cost pressures on the businesses. This means pub owners have to choose between upping their prices, laying off staff members or closing the business. The plan of action to combat this is increasing the threshold at which businesses are eligible for rates and a discount for pubs available over the last two financial years.

Case Study (Kind of animal based): Flamingo Bar and Grill (Indian restaurant) forced to close after mice left rotting in traps and dribbles of urine found in dishes were discovered by health officials during an inspection. The restaurant was situated in Belgrave, Leicestershire where health officials reported that the mouse activity created an ‘immediate risk to injury to health’. Along with urine, faecal matter was discovered all over the store and kitchen floor. Stagnant water was also found in various places. The restaurant is not allowed to reopen until inspectors are happy with the hygiene standards.
