  • The rebelion in July 17th 1936 was in the garrisons of the spanish protectorade Morocco.

  • The coup was led by generals Sanjurjo, Franco and Mola.

  • It was supported by right-wing ideas (carlists, monarchists...).

  • The military insurrection failed in most major cities, this lead to a civil war. As a result of the coup, Spain was divided into two zones.

  • The Civil War broke in a critical moment for international relations. There was tensions betqeen the great european democracies(UK and France) and the Nazi regimes. The UK and France promoted a non-intervetion agreement, signed by 27 countries.

    -Rebel side received equipment from Italy and Germany in exchange of minerals.


    • - The Republic had support from the USSR, France, Mexico and also from intellectuals. This war was considered as a symbol of the struggle against the fascism. Because of this some volunteers joined international Brigades, organised by communist international.

  • Republican government moved to Valencia, handing over Madrid´s defense to a military junta

  • The arrival of the international Brigades and Soviet aupport helped prevent Madrid´s fall.

  • The revels were defeated in the Battle of Jarama and the Battle of Guadalajara.

  • At February 1938 the rebels took Teruel and advanced to the Mediteranean and they isolated Cataluña.

  • Republican government attemted to prolong the war, thinking that European conflicts could bring allies to them

  • In July 1938 republican troopa passed the Ebro to attack Franco´s army, but it failed.

  • The Battle of Ebro facilited the rebel to advanced to Cataluña.

  • Barcelona fell at January 1939, followed by Madrid in March 1939.

  • The rebels occupied the last republican territories such as Valencia, Alicante, Cartagena...

  • The civil war ended at the first April of 1939.
