Most of the Sikhs moved to Punjab portion of India and wanted their own state. They achieved this goal in 1966. Conflict broke between the Indian government and Sikh fundamentalists,  who where demanding a seprate Sikh nation-state. In 1984 the Sikhs occupided Ahal Takht in the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar. In response the Indian Prime Minister ordered a military assault and the Sikhs where killed, and the Prime Minister was assassinated by the Sikhs.
