What is paradoxical about Shakespeare's works within a slightly different world?

One of the paradoxes present in the current events of the novel is John's appreciation of both Shakespeare's work and the world outside of the Reservation. Since Shakespeare's works and ideas are cast out in the Brave New World, John's love for it is paradoxical in the fact that by entering the Brave New World, he would have to throw out the ideas and conclusions he came to through Shakespeare's works.

Shakespeare's Satirical Views

Romeo and Juliet was one of Shakespeare's works that satirized the romantic culture in the Elizabethan Era, given the fact that the whole course of the novel took place in a time span of about four days. The story depicts a melodramatic love between two teenagers that caused many deaths, showing Shakespeare's disdain for the values of love in his time. In Hamlet, Shakespeare uses satire to show that royalty is not always fit to run their kingdom, which could become an idea shown in Brave New World through the use of the Director and Mustapha Mond.

Themes present in Shakespeare works

The themes present in Shakespeare's works are seen as violent and passionate in nature. Many of Shakespeare's works carry a strong importance and weight to one's family and those that they love like the stories Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet. In these stories, passion and violence are brought on towards one's family or one's love. These themes of passion and violence make a stark contrast to how the new world works and how Shakespeare's works are viewed by the characters verses how they can be applied.

Linda states that "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare" that John received is uncivilized and full of nonsense. Shakespeare's works present many violent themes and plot lines that are surprising to normal people, making them extreme to Lenina. Due to the highly structured and civil society of the new world, Shakespeare's works are seen as barbaric and unbelievable. The violence in them inspires John to try and murder Pope, showing how the themes that these texts present affect people's way of thinking and actions.

Shakespeare as a Symbol

The appearance of Shakespeare's works in Brave New World seems to symbolize all of the art or literature that was cast away in order to further the idea of "Community, Identity, Stability." When Linda calls Shakespeare's writing "barbaric and uncivilized" due to the violence and passion depicted, she unwittingly speaks on behalf of the leaders of the Brave New World, who censored the works of Shakespeare because of his themes of violence. Second, the romance, drama, and emotion that Shakespeare shows through his works could relate to all of the finer aspects of humanity that the Brave New World destroyed to create eternal happiness. In the Brave New World, love, a recurring theme of Shakespearean works, seems to be forbidden and looked down upon.

Two more strong themes that are present in many of Shakespeare's works are fate and free will. These themes can be seen in some of his notable works such as Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth. These themes of fate and free will also can be seen as paradoxical in the novel since fate and free will are not important at all in the New World, but they are important to those like John. People like Linda from the New World see fate and free will as dirty and wrong.
