<title>Hedda and Henchard are both concerned with social status. Neither wishes to risk losing face, so they deceive others. &amp;nbsp;Hedda feigns love for Tesman because in her time/place, marriage is an expectation and Tesman appears to have a promising future. &amp;nbsp;Similarly, Henchard arranges to &quot;marry&quot; Susan when she arrives in Casterbridge, despite already being married to her. &amp;nbsp; He doesn&#39;t love her but feels he must pay for his past sin.</title>
