I grew up with my mother. I didn't know my father before the army or during his army experience. I began to know my father after the army, when I was closer to middle school age. This was the time were my father was learning how to cope with PTSD. This was not a fun experience for me... 
I don't know, I feel when someone who has a parent struggling with PTSD is hard not just for the them, but is hard for the child. It's kind of like getting to know someone completely different.

* One way a teacher can be more empathetic is to have a guest speaker come in and share with students. Share the culture, personal positive experiences, stories of human interactions, etc.
