Mrs. Maloney clearly didn't control her emotions when she took her anger out on her her husband. When Mrs. Maloney didn't hear the answer she wanted to hear she took her anger out and grabbed a frozen lamb leg from the freezer for example "At that point, Mary Maloney simply walked up behind him and without any pause she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head." (Paragraph 40) and she hit him in the head with it.

Mary Maloney was sitting in her chair and she was sewing. Then it all started when the husband got home. Mr.Maloney was drinking alcohol and he had too much and then Mary wanted to cook dinner but her husband had said no. But then she had gotten a frozen lamb leg from the freezer down stairs. With the lamb Mary struck her husband is the back of the head and had killed him and she had went to the store to get food for her dinner. Then she had made herself dinner and talked to her husband like he had been there and like he was living. She had wondered what she was gonna do with her husband because his dead body had laid on the floor in the living room motionless breathless and lifeless. Mary called the police station and she had said that patrick was dead and was laying on the floor. She lied to the police and had told them that she had gone to he grocery store and came back and then she had found him onto the floor. There was a lot of people 2 cops, a doctor, detectives, fingerprints guy and others. Then they had gone searching outside for a murder weapon and they had thought it was a piece of metal. Even though they had all of the policemen and investigators they never actually found out who the real suspect was. They did not even find the murder weapon. The investigators may never know but the readers of Lamb To The Slaughter will know.

Thinking Question 1- Brooke

Q: Mrs. Maloney seemed very excited and happy that her husband was coming home from work. Why do you think she had the motive to kill him so much? Was the news she was given really that bad?
A: Mary did love her husband, but I think she was expected to love and be with her husband like all women "should" be doing. Like the Story of an Hour, the wife was expected to be with her husband no matter if she loved him or not. When she found out he was dead, she felt free and alive. I think Mrs. Maloney killed Mr. Maloney so she could feel free and clear minded just like Mrs. Mallard did in Story of an Hour. This makes me feel that she felt like life would be easier without him.

Q: Why did Mrs. Maloney for one use a frozen lamb leg and what gave her the motive to kill her husband?

A: Mrs. Maloney was making dinner and from the news Mr. Maloney gave her, Mrs. Maloney had the audacity to kill her husband. And she used the lamb because of the news and his sins he had done.

I found that The Story of Any Hour was most like this story in the sense that both wives are happy about the death of their husbands.

Symbols- Brooke

Maloney- Mad
Mary- Rebellion
Sam- God has heard
Patrick- Noble
O'Malley-Gentle
Jack- God is gracious
Noonan- Beloved
Charlie- Man
Lamb- Sweetness; forgiveness Whiskey- Scottish translation to "water of life". Sewing- Associated with fixing, repairing, or renewing something in your life. Peas- Prosperity Potatoes- Happiness

Although there are many symbols that are important in this story, there are a few that are very significant. For example, the main character Mary Maloney. These names all have major meanings, and her name fits perfetly with her personality. For example, Mary means rebellion. In the story, Mary kills her husband with a lamb leg and doesn't feel bad about it at all. Rebellion means to break the rules and violence, which she clearly shows in her actions. In addition, Maloney means mad. Mary was very angry about the news she was told by Patrick, and she killed him with her overwhelming rage. Even Patrick had that grumpy vibe to him. Speaking of Patrick, his name means noble. Noble means a leader or a higher class, which makes sense because he was the man of the house and Mary was expected to fall under his power. There is one more symbol that ties together the entire story. The lamb symbolizes forgiveness, and maybe she was doing him a favor by killing him because the news was that something bad was going to happen to him. But it also symbolizes christianity because lambs were killed for their sins. So maybe Mary killed him because the news was going to get him into trouble.

Cartoon- Katrina

This cartoon shows a person thinking about which emotion to feel. This connects to the story because Mrs. Maloney herself didn't control her emotions. For example " At that point, Mary Maloney simply walked ip behind him and without any pause she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head." (Paragraph 40) She clearly here didn't control her emotions. If Mrs. Maloney were to control her emotions she maybe could have talked to him and then this story would have gone down a different route. You may be in a bad divot but you should always take a deep breath and think about your actions/decisions before you do them.
