Pioneer Life

The image of the frontier is the complete opposite of what pioneer life was actually like. Life was seen as an army of muscular axmen carving a civilization of the western woods. The reality was life was very hard. People were poorly fed, disease, depression, premature death, bad housing and a loneliness that haunted them. The American life was hard in the west. Self reliance is a good way to portray the west.

Technological Advances

The cotton gin was the most important technological advancement from the 19th century. It basically revolutionized the US and the rest of the world overnight. Developed by Eli Whitney it changed of economy. More land could now be used for cotton and it became highly profitable. Both the North and South would prosper. The farms would move west and the cotton gin sparked the textile industry. However this innovation led to increased slavery and could been seen as one of the starters for the civil war.

Railroads and canals were so important during the early stages of industrialization because they provided a faster route of transportation of goods. Many cities sprouted up along canals and especially along the Erie canal. Places such as Syracuse and Rochester. These cities would blossom on the canal. Railroads provided even better transportation as they could go almost anywhere, were fast and cheaper than canals. These things would help lead to trade within the country and the trade of things such as textiles. All these things led to the increase of industrialization and the sprouting up of cities along the routes of canals and railroads.

People now no longer had to provide for themselves by making their own food and clothes so they went out and got jobs at the mills and factories. Some planted crops but they would go for sale at the markets to make money. Now household goods such as soup would be bought, not made. There were now more rich than before. Some disadvantages were that big companies would eventually start to take over. It was now more important to live near cities and places with markets so you could get a job or sell crops.

Market and Transportation Revolutions

Both revolutions can been seen by being started by increased technology and mechanization. The development of railroads helped transportation and led to new cities sprouting up. the same can be said for canals. Better technology such as things to make fabrics and the cotton gin helped the beginning of the textile industry and the change to factories. Better farming methods lead to commercial farming rather than subsistence. technology was the main reason for both of these revolutions

Factory System

I agree that the system did not shower benefits evenly with all. People had long hours, low wages, bad meals and working conditions. They weren't allowed to form labor unions to gain higher wages as it was against the law. Children were also put to work and many of the nation's toiler workers were under the age of 10. Strikes began to occur to rebel for better wages, conditions and other opportunities. Although many strikes were lost, the people were fighting for their rights. Commonwealth vs Hunt was another opportunity for the people.

Starting from the Louisiana purchase we began to start our movement to the western part of the united states. The life was not as great as it was perceived. Life was hard and people were isolated. That was until the market revolution. Life started to change and people became more dependent on factory jobs and getting their food from markets, rather than growing it on their own. The native Americans would continue to be pushed out by the white men. Life as a whole changed in America as the country got bigger by westward expansion.
