The term Gothic Literature refers to a style of writing that is characterized by elements of fear, horror, death, and gloom, as well as romantic elements, such as nature, individuality, and very high emotion. These emotions can include fear and suspense.
"The legend of Sleepy Hollow" is a short story written by Washington Irving under the Gothic genre. Gothic literature employs elements of the super natural to scare or thrill its readers. Sleepy Hollow has the supernatural "Headless Horseman" who haunts everyone while looking for his decapitated head. The story also ends in a cliff hanger as do most movies and horror novels. The fate of Ichabod Crane is left for the readers to wonder about. The general setting of the story also set in a very dark and grim manner. The town is described to be a very quiet and slow moving one with very little activity. Another short story written by Washington Irving is "Rip Van Winkle". Rip is the protagonist who simply wants some peace from his wife who nags him all the time as he doesn't get any work done.
